Udupi, Jan 23: The workshop on ‘Quality Improvement in Jewellery Making and BIS Hallmarking Scheme for Artisans’ was inaugurated at MIT, Manipal here on Monday
January 22. The workshop has been organised by Manipal Institute of Jewellery Management and Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

Speaking on the occasion, BIS deputy general manager P Sengupta stressed on the need for creating awareness about hallmark jewellery among consumers, sellers and artisans.

He said that out of the jewellery firms which have obtained license for hallmarking, 50 per cent are from south India. He lauded the organisers of the workshop for having taken this initiative.

During a recent survey in 16 cities of the country, it was revealed that 90 per cent of the jewellers do not maintain the purity of gold, hence this workshop has been organised to address the problem, said director and head of BIS Bangalore R C Mathew.

Manipal University vice-chancellor Dr R P Warrier presided over the programme and inaugurated the workshop. Gujjadi Narasimha Nayak of Swarna Jewellery Education Foundation was the chief guest.
