New Delhi, Feb 17 (IANS): Defending champions Delhi Waveriders will host table-toppers Uttar Pradesh Wizards in an inconsequential Hockey India League (HIL) contest at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium here Wednesday.
Both teams have qualified for the semi-finals, to be played this weekend here. Hence, both will look to show their supremacy, in case they once again meet in the knockouts. The previous match between the two ended in a 2-2 draw.
With 30 points, the Wizards have shown immense potential from the beginning of the tournament and have proved to be a threat to almost every team. Meanwhile, Waveriders trail with 23 points in hand and will be looking at synchronising the right rhythm before entering the semis.
The defending champions will focus on their on-field strategy where they play a cumulative game in both attack and defence. They will ensure that no gaps are left open in order to restrict the Wizards from cashing on the counter-attacks.
“The team has been consistent with its performance. Though we have not bagged a lot of wins, we have been successful in giving a tough fight to almost every participating team," Waveriders coach Cedric D'souza said.
"Wizards are one of the strongest teams and we are well prepared for the clash. The team has worked on circle penetrations and from here will work towards successfully converting the opportunities. We gave a tough fight to the Wizards in our prior clash and will try to close the match on a winning note this time.”
