UAE closes embassy in Yemen

Abu Dhabi, Feb 14 (IANS/WAM): The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced Saturday it has suspended operations at its embassy in Yemeni capital Sanaa and evacuated all diplomatic staff.

In a statement, the foreign ministry said it took the decision due to the increasing deterioration of the political and security situation Yemen was witnessing.

The security situation in Yemen deteriorated after the Shia Houthis undermined the legitimate authority and the political transition based on the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) initiative and results of the UN Security Council-backed national dialogue.

The political impasse in Yemen also prompted the US, Britain, France, Italy and Germany to withdraw their diplomatic staff in Sanaa, citing the security situation.
