Udupi: Negligent driving ends in accident at Udyavar - One dead, 10 injured

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (UM)

Udupi, Feb 8: In an accident resulting out of reported negligent driving, an express bus crashed into a mini bus at Udyavar national highway here on Sunday February 8, causing the death of one person and injuries to 10 others.

The deceased has been identified as Santosh Nandalike (27), an electrician by profession.

A group of about 25 persons from Belman were on a trip to Kemmannu when the accident took place.

It is said that at Udyavar, on the highway, an express bus plying from Mangaluru to Udupi overtook the mini bus, and in a bid to give competition to the bus, the mini bus driver reportedly stepped up the speed and overtook the bus. The express bus driver in response increased his speed, and while trying to overtake the mini bus again, it hit the latter from behind.

The impact was such that the mini bus turned over and Santosh who was in it was killed instantly.

Ten others who were in the mini bus sustained injuries, out of whom three are said to be serious. Some of the injured have been identified as Rajesh, Karunakar, Rajesh, Prakash and Prabhakar who was driving the mini bus.

It is alleged that though the government hospital is just a kilometre away from the spot of the accident, and has three 108 ambulances, none of them arrived in spite of being informed. The injured were taken to hospital by police vehicles and private cars by locals.

Some of the injured have been admitted to Adarsh hospital.

The traffic on the highway was affected for sometime. Circle inspector Srikanth, PSI Madhu, traffic SI and others came to the spot and cleared the traffic. The locals too helped the police in shifting the injured to hospital.

Why do u blame the ministers, MLAs' etc. aren't we responsible for our own lives?? Dont we know what speeding leads to. doesn't a bus driver understand he is responsible for the lives of his passengers??? two wheelers go without helmets and take all the inner routes and escape from cops. can they escape death or cheat death? i always question who are they cheating. for what joy? dont they know people are waiting for them to return back home? mothers fathers wife children!! Unfortunately sometimes an innocent persons life is gone so young. zig zag zooming will lead nowhere. of course u will reach your destination 5 minutes earlier. but is that 5 minutes worth your life?

In UAE speed limiter is fixed for certain vehicles. They cannot drive the vehicle more than certain speed. We can try this on Indian vehicles. If limiter is fixed for speed 60kph it can only go up to that speed. Just a suggestion?!

I pray that this Poor Boy's soul gets eternal rest, He lost his life for the Mischief of Drivers. When will the Speed governors be installed in Heavy vehicles, the way the private buses ply the road, I feel they should limit speed electronically and make it compulsory for Heavy vehicles to have a Below 50 km/hr.

May the Soul of deceased rest in peace. He had to die because of both negligent Drivers driving stil.I think it is better to put a axillator which cant be driven more than only 60km.per hour.so that Driver cannot make a high race on roads. At present too many vehicles on the road.no place for a normal Person to walk on the road.I cant understand how could None of the ambulances came to help.why then of having ambulances?Mr.khader should clear it.after all they are getting pay,.or were they somewhere with Hospital ambulances?or Money was Problem?

Very sad news . Speed kills .Why to overtake unnecessarily which result in accident? This is Drivers reckless driving ? Drivers needs to be educated .The express buses always overtaking and it is dangerous for the pedestrians to walk on the road. Because of this so many lives are lost in the past and this is one. Don't violate the traffic rules for the safety. May the departed soul Rest in peace

Brian, No there are not sleeping they are enjoying life during duty hours.
Transport Minister & C.M. are sleeping without any doubt.
Daily average 10 to 15 road accidents in our Karavali are happening but not a single responsible person ever spoke about controlling this Traffic system.
All party Politicians are busy calling press conference & blaming each other or another Political party. And fooling public by giving false promise

Unfortunately Police nor RTO is not bothered about the reckless and negligent driving by the Service buses. They drive in such a way, one is definitely gets horrified driving in these roads. If you question them for their negligent behavior you will be stunned, they immediately get down and attack you as if you have committed a grave mistake. This happened to me so many times. They put head lights and just wade all the way, even the Police are mute spectators. One should understand that there is understanding between the Police and the drivers. Once the accident takes place, the drivers are instructed to run away never to be caught. The system is deteriorating in such a way it is very hard to repair it unless the Govt. nationalises the service buses. that is the only way you can control this menace.

Reckless driving resulting in deaths is what one hears of practically every day. It is worse in Mangalore City where the three wheelers and buses make it very difficult for private motorists to drive.

Hope the police will take action the erring drivers.

Dear Districts Administrative personnel, please get-up from your deep sleep and save the innocent people on the road by strictly enforcing speed governess to all public service vehicles and especially killer express buses between Mangalore to Udupi. You have the authority and you are responsible to stop this nonsense of express bus havoc. Mean time did police caught the driver? Or escaped from the spot? If escaped, he may come with lawyer and go free
