Udupi, Feb 8: The local policemen have succeeded in arresting two thieves, who had gained expertise in entering houses of people in the district since sometime and stealing cash as well as gold and silver ornaments from there.
The policemen also succeeded in seizing cash and ornaments worth Rs 1.6 lac from their possession.
The arrested persons are Anilkumar from Koppa in Chikmagalur district, and Nagesh from Kodankur in Shikaripur, Shivamogga district. 53 grams of gold ornaments, 250 grams of silver valuables, two cell phones, and Rs 8,200 in cash,were recovered from their possession.
Both were produced in the court, after which they were remanded to judicial custody. The policemen said that Anill Kumar, who happens to be the main accused, is an inter-state thief.
The duo had committed theft from a house in Pilichandi Street in Beedinagudde in the town on the night of January 22, by breaking open the door lock and taking away cash and ornaments. Sniffer dogs were called for assistance, and finger print experts were pressed into service. A case was registered in town police station here. During verification of finger prints obtained, the experts found that they matched with the finger prints of Anil Kumar, who had committed theft from a house within Padubidri poilce station. The police then procured his photograph from Padubistri station, and found him from near Priyadarshini Hotel in the town on February 5. On the basis of information collected from him, the other accused, Nagesh was arrested.
The operation to nab the thieves was conducted by city police circle inspector, Srikanth K and town station crime police sub-inspector, Rajgopal, with the guidance of additional superinendent of police, Santosh Kumar and deputy superintendent of police, K M Chandrashekhar, under the directions of district superintendent of police, Annamalai K.
