Waveriders take on Warriors in HIL

New Delhi, Jan 29 (IANS): Playing the first match on their home turf, defending champions Delhi Waveriders are all geared to take on Jaypee Punjab Warriors at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium here Friday.

It is a repeat of last year's final of the Hockey India League (HIL) where the Waveriders defeated the Warriors to claim the title. This time while Delhi will yet again look at achieving the same feat, Punjab, with its formidable line-up led by Jamie Dwyer, will aim to defeat the hosts.

Of the three matches played in HIL till now, the Warriors have won two and drawn one and are comfortably sitting on top of the points table. On the other hand, the Waveriders, who have played two matches and have drawn both, will be eyeing for a win and claiming full five points.

"We are very happy and confident on the two back-to-back wins. This has boosted our self belief and has made us more determined to give our best performance in the upcoming match," Dwyer said.

"We aim to give a challenging fight to Delhi Waveriders by maintaining our momentum and high spirit in order to win the clash. We are working on our attack and aim to keep them busy on their D tomorrow."

Speaking on the clash, Waveriders head coach Cedric D'Souza said that the team is working towards a win.

"We have analysed ourselves in terms of how we have played in the past matches. We are also continuously working on rectifying the mistakes we committed and ensure that we do not repeat them in future," said D'Souza.

"The third season of HIL will be very strong in terms of balance in the teams as every team has prepared themselves and gauged thoroughly to lift the trophy. I look forward to the match."
