DR Congo's Kidiaba oldest player in 2015 Afcon


Bata (Equatorial Guinea), Jan 19 (IANS): Democratic Republic of Congo's first choice goalkeeper Robert Muteba Kidiaba said he is happy to be the oldest player to feature in the ongoing 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

"I have been working hard over the years and being the oldest player in the tournament this year means a lot to me that I am still enjoying good form," Kidiaba told Xinhua.

Kidiaba who is known for his fantastic acrobatic saves and emotional celebrations will celebrate his 39th birthday Feb 1.

The experienced goalkeeper, who has also helped DR Congo's top side TP Mazembe win the CAF Champions League trophy before, said he is also eager to enter the history books by winning the Afcon trophy.

"We are hungry to get far in this tournament and we know it will not be easy," added Kidiaba.

DR Congo, who are in Group B alongside Zambia, Tunisia and Cape Verde Islands, have only won the Afcon trophy once in 1968.

According to information provided by Confederation of African Football (CAF), out of the 368 players who are taking part in the 2015 Afcon which started in Equatorial Guinea Jan 17, only 26 are over 30 years.

Pierre Sylvain Abogo, Cameroon's third-choice goalkeeper is the youngest player at the event as he turns 17 Jan 27.
