Kundapur, Jan 9: K Annamalai, who has recently taken over as the new superintendent of police (SP) of Udupi district, has taken steps to bring a halt to carrying of sand, stones, etc in open trucks. This initiative, it is hoped, will bring curtains down on the practice of transportation of rocks, laterite stones, sand, mud etc that are perilously heaped on trucks and tippers without any protection, thus posing danger to road users. The SP has told to all the police stations in the district in no uncertain terms that this practice has to be ended at the earliest.
Considering increasing incidence of crime in the district and traffic bottlenecks, he has directed policemen to register not less than 50 cases every day without fail. He has directed them to reach the target of 100 cases on Saturdays and Sundays.
It is generally believed that these actions of the SP will compel the local traffic policemen to wake up and act fast. So far, trucks and other vehicles have been carrying the above materials in the taluk in a negligent manner with impunity, in blatant violation of rules in the presence of traffic police. The people, who had brought the above aspect to the notice of the SP, are happy that he has responded to their problems and issued orders immediately on Thursday itself.
