Three Indians in Junior British Squash Open quarters


Sheffield, Jan 4 (IANS): National under-19 champion Kush Kumar along with Velavan Senthil Kumar (U-17) and Tushar Shahini (U-15) entered the quarter-finals in their respective age groups in the British Junior Open Squash Championship here.

Kush, a trainee at the Indian Squash Academy in Chennai, began his campaign with an 11-2, 11-2, 11-5 win over Bjorn Osterhus of Norway and followed it up with a comfortable victory over Lawrence Green of Britain 11-3, 11-3, 11-6 before overcoming Britain's Patrick Rooney 11-9, 11-0, 6-11, 11-5 for a place in the Boys U-19 quarter-finals Saturday.

In the U-17 section, Kush's academy mate Senthil Kumar beat Aaron Allpress (Britain) 11-2, 11-3, 11-3 in the opening round, Calvin McCafferty of Britain 11-5, 9-11, 11-3, 11-4 and Roman Allinckx of Switzerland 11-8, 11-8, 11-8.

Shahini got past Jarred Carter (Britain) in the pre-quarterfinal 9-11, 12-10, 7-11, 11-5, 13-11 after defeating Benjamin Sockett (Britain) 11-4, 11-7, 11-7 and Jeremias Azana of Argentina 11-7, 11-3, 11-6.
