Starz releases 'The Interview' from Sony output deal

Los Angeles, Dec 25 (IANS): Premium cable and satellite television network Starz has released “The Interview” from its output deal with Sony Pictures Entertainment.

A representative from the company issued a statement saying: “As the situation with 'The Interview' is new territory and has been constantly evolving, Starz released the film from its output deal in order to allow Sony maximum flexibility with their distribution strategy.”

Since February 2013, Starz has held exclusive pay TV rights to Sony's theatrical content through 2021.

"The Interview" has been in news as its release was cancelled by Sony Pictures Entertainment following a cyber attack on it and threats to movie-goers.

But now, apart from releasing the film it in 300 independent theatres on Christmas, Sony has even released “The Interview” on digital platforms with the help of Google Play, YouTube and XBox.

The comedy film, starring James Franco and Seth Rogen, revolves around a fictitious US plot to assassinate the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
