Panaji, Nov 28: The films produced in the name of patriotism on legendary national heroes lack political analysis of their career, feels renowned Kanada film-maker M S Sathyu.
"In last two years, five different films on Bhagat Singh were produced.... They were much different from the original Shahid Bhagat singh by Manoj Kumar," Sathyu pointed out while participating in the open forum organized as part of the International film festival of India, 2006 in Goa.
"Personally I feel that in the name of patriotism you don't politically analyse the character. THe whole thing becomes how much you feel for these characters," stated Sathyu, who had directed a heroic film 'Kanneshwara Rama' (The Legendry Outlaw) produced in 1976, based on the life of a dacoit of Malnad region in Karnataka.
He said that there is contradiction in the country as to who is a national hero. "Everything is decided by politics and many a time, great heroes are misrepresented politically," Sathyu said.
"At times we tend to make unimportant characters very important," he added.
Talking about Subhashchandra Bose, Sathyu said that even now the great leader was being considered as traitor in the Indian Army. "The Indian Army refused to cooperate during production of film on Bose... They (Army) refused to wear Indian National Army's uniform when the film was produced by Satyajit Ray," he stated.
Sathyu said that film on national heroes is a very dicey subject and difficult to produce.
