Atletico Madrid ban symbols of violent supporter group

Madrid, Dec 13 (IANS): Spanish football club Atletico Madrid announced they will ban football fans from wearing symbols of one of the radical supporter groups during a forthcoming match against Villarreal.

In a notice published on the website of Atletico Friday, the club said those who either wear a scarf or carry a banner of the 'Frente Atletico', a radical supporter group of Atletico Madrid, will not be allowed to attend Sunday's game, reports Xinhua.

"The entry to the stadium with banners or flags representing the Frente Atletico, or any other element which contains symbols prohibited by the law or with messages which are either political, racist or xenophobic in character or which incite violence or assault the dignity of anyone will be forbidden," read the notice.

The move comes almost two weeks after a supporter of Deportivo la Coruna, Javier Romero Taboada, was killed during a fight between members of the Frente Atletico and Deportivo's 'Riazor Blues' near the Vicente Calderon Stadium.

Police arrested 21 people after the fight Nov 30 that involved up to 200 people. Investigations are underway to identify other suspects.

The incident has prompted the Spanish Football League and the police to identity radical supporters groups and prohibit their entry into stadiums.

The notice also calls for "maximum respect for the rivals".
