Lisbon, Dec 10 (IANS): German side Bayer Leverkusen were held to a 0-0 draw by Benfica, losing the top spot in Group C of the UEFA Champions League at the Luz Stadium here.
The top spot was clinched by France's Monaco after beating Zenit St Petersburg 2-0 in France Tuesday. Benfica had already been knocked out of the competition, reports Xinhua.
The Germans started off dominating the match in early minutes, but the real opening came in the 11th minute when Lima's powerful effort hit the top of the crossbar following a pass by Ola John on the left flank. Another effort by Lima went wide late in the first half.
Leverkusen almost scored in the 62nd through Roberto Hilbert but his effort bounced off the post. Central defender Omer Toprak was shown a red card in the 90th.
