ATK look for victory at home to seal semis berth

Kolkata, Dec 9 (IANS): After losing vital points in their last few matches, Atletico de Kolkata (ATK) need to log a victory to assure themselves of a semifinal berth as they wrap up their round robin engagements in the Indian Super League (ISL) against FC Goa here Wednesday.

The visitors, now second in the eight-team table after Chennaiyin FC with 21 points from 13 games, are already through to the last four. ATK are a rung below the ladder and three points adrift.

Returning to their home ground after going down 1-2 to Mumbai City FC, ATK would hope to regain confidence in front of the fans who are expected to make it a full house at the stadium.

While a victory would propel them into the play-offs, a drawn result could also carry Kolkata to the next stage, though they then may have to wait for the results of the other matches.

ATK team management would look out for a good performance from their skipper and marquee player Luis Garcia and Botswana medio Ofentse Nato on whom lie the responsibility of feeding Ethiopian forward Fikru Teferra.

For Fikru, who has netted four goals in 11 games, it could well be one of the best opportunities to prove his worth to the team when they need his services the most.

It remains to be seen if ATK coach Antonio Habas opts for midfielder Sanju Pradhan in the starting line-up, as the Indian had played well in the previous match long with ATK's utility player Baljit Sahni.

There is much speculation that FC Goa's celebrated coach Zico would not field a full strength side to keep his players fresh for the semi-final battle.

Interacting with reporters on the match eve, Zico sought to keep his strategy under wraps.

"For tomorrow I have the ideal team, you will see it," was all that he would divulge.

The Kolkata crowd may be lucky to witness former Arsenal forward Robert Pires, who could be in the first eleven. The Brazilian Andre Dos Santos, who had scored in the first leg of the encounter, could once again be a threat to the Kolkata defence

Czech goalie Jan Seda has also been brilliant for the visitors so far. Along with Frenchman Gregory Arnolin and Santos they form a formidable trio at the back. The Brazilian has also played the role of an attacker with four goals and three assists so far this season.

In the Goa leg of the encounter it was Santos's goal that gave FC Goa the lead, but a brace from Atletico attacking medio Cavin Lobo clinched the game for the Kolkata franchise 2-1.

It promises to be a pacy and energetic contest with Kolkata fans keeping their fingers crossed for a favourable result.
