Panaji, Dec 8 (IANS): Police will soon conduct background checks of all taxi drivers in Goa in the aftermath of the rape of a 25-year-old business executive by a radio taxi driver in Delhi.

Inspector General of Police Sunil Garg told IANS that such measures were being contemplated in Goa, a known beach tourism destination, where tourist cabs are the main source of commute for tourists.

"Yes, we will go for it," Garg said, when asked if the police were considering a background check of Goa's cabbies after an Uber driver, Shiv Kumar Yadav, secured a license despite being accused of sexual assault in 2011.

Yadav, 32, has been accused of raping the woman Friday night. He was arrested Sunday at Mathura in Uttar Pradesh.

Goa is one of the most popular beach tourism destinations in India. Special taxis approved by the tourist department and regular yellow-black taxis are the main mode of public transport for the three million tourists who travel to the state.

In the recent past, numerous violent disputes have been reported between taxi drivers and tourists, mainly over fares and misbehaviour.
