Banthia, Sathwika enter last eight in junior tennis


Pune, Dec 3 (IANS): Pune's Under-14 national champion Siddanth Banthia, Nick Consalvo of Australia and Sama Sathwika upset seeded players to enter the quarter-finals of the Gadre-MSLTA ITF Junior Tennis Championships at the Mhalunge Balewadi Tennis Stadium here Wednesday.

Wild card Banthia scored a 6-3, 6-2 win to upset seventh seeded Ballekere Ravikumar Nikshep in the pre-quarterfinals. Unseeded Consalvo registered a big upset accounting for second seeded Kareem Allaf of Syria 6-2, 7-5 to make the last eight.

Among the girls, Sama scored a 6-4, 6-3 win over eighth seeded Jennifer Luikham to also make it to the last eight.

Top seed Tamachan Momkoonthod, Plobrung Plipuch of Thailand, Mihika Yadav, Vasanti Shinde, Georgina Axon, Zeel Desai and Huang Hsiang Wen of Taipei were the other players to make it to the last eight in the girls section.

In the boys section, top seeded Jay Clarke of Britain, Vasisht Cheruku, Jack Macfarlane of Britain, Paramveer Singh Bajwa, Aryan Goveas along with wild card Rian Pandole made it to the quarter-finals.
