Kasargod, Dec 2: The assistant sub-inspector (ASI) who was accused of sexually assaulting a young woman, was found dead here on Tuesday December 2.
ASI Sugunan (52), who was accused of sexually assaulting a 25-year-old woman from Adoor, was found dead near his house in Nileshwar. It is suspected that he committed suicide.
It is said that on Tuesday morning he left from home for his usual walk, but did not return. His family members who grew anxious began searching for him, and soon his body was found hanging from a tree near the house, sources said.
The alleged sexual assault took place 5 months ago, but the complaint was only recently filed. The victim is said to be pregnant.
Sugunan was arrested following the complaint and remanded in judicial custody for two weeks, but later let out on bail. He was also suspended from duty.
As per the complaint, Sugunan had obtained the woman's cell phone number when she had come to the police station to file another complaint, and contacted her. Later Sugunan also took her to a lodge in Subramanya and allegedly sexually assaulted her.The sexual attack was committed in month of June in 2014 as per the complaint.
The victim in her complaint mentioned that she was also sexually assaulted in a doctor's residence by his relative Hanif in May 2014. As result police also filed a case against Hanif and arrested him.
