Puttur: Driver's presence of mind saved bus passengers

Puttur, Dec 2: The presence of mind shown by the driver of the private bus that caught fire saved the lives of the passengers, said Dakshina Kannada SP Dr Sharanappa.

The Seabird bus, plying from Bengaluru towards Manipal, caught fire when it reaced Sannampady near Uppinangady here, reportedly due to short circuit.

The bus was completely charred in the fire, but all the passengers managed to escape. Among them two were injured.

SP Dr Sharanappa said that the bus had stopped at Nellyady for an early morning tea break and resumed its journey. As it was a sleeper bus, the engine was located at the back of the bus. When it reached a distance of about five kilometres from Nellyady, smoke started to emanate from the engine. Some of the passengers who noticed the smoke informed the driver, who immediately stopped the bus. He then opened the emergency exit door, the main doors and broke the window panes with the help of others, and got the passengers out in no time, thus averting a major tragedy.

There were 26 passengers in the bus, among whom two were injured. One of them has been identified as Bharatrani (22), who sustained burn injuries on the hand. As there was no mobile network available at the spot, it took time for help to arrive, it is learnt.

The bus reduced to ashes minutes after the passengers got out. Their luggages were totally charred. The passengers were then taken to their destination by other vehicles.

To avoid traffic jam, the bus was moved over to the side of the road with the help of a crane, it is learnt.

I regularly travel between Bangalore and Mangalore. Seabird service and maintenance has reduced considerably over time.
In my last two travel in their bus, their buses were loaded with too much luggage over rooftop. It was tilting dangerously at the turnings. Once the bus got punctured in ghat section and they could not repair it at all. They are frequently late on arrival and departures. The customer care or emails are not responded at all. I even complained to ITDC which told they will talk yo operators. Very pathetic operator.
    Best to avoid.

Well, sleeper bus does not imply rear engine. This is a 12m Ashok Leyland bus with front engine.

1- Just look at the additional lights on this bus . absolutely unnecessary . Which means some cutting of wires would have been done for sure.

These lights are illegal , WHY DIDNT COPS ALL ALONG THE ROUTE NEVER STOP THESE BUSES WHICH BLIND ONCOMING TRAFFIC WITH 6 HEADLIGHTS

2- Some of these private buses will allow anything to be carried in their luggage bays . This is done right under the noses of the traffic enforcement .
In this case , I am sure this has got to do with some inflammable luggage being carried .

Instead of punishing the bus owners , it should be the law enforcement department that should be rapped on their knuckles

Its just simply cost cutting that is cause.. the owners of these so called luxury buses simply to cut cost compromise on safety features when they purchase the bus and this is cause of most of the accidents..and most of these buses do not even carry a fire extinguisher or a first aid kid... As is the rules in every other other that any 4 wheel vehicle must carry a fire extinguisher and is regularly checked for expiry.. but in the Great India nothing or no rules matter.. people always found a way to get around it and always will.. until someone close to them is hurt and then these same people will blame others for not taking proper precautions.
When and if all the people will start following and obey all rules there will be no better place than India to live.

Thank God no life is lost.
Govt should immediately implement safety to human life while on wheels.
Building intercity straight broad roads and Railways also should be on war footing.
Two things are scarce, time and fuel.
Traveling cost should be reduced by cutting traveling time.

@Valerian D'Souza .. there is no use of asking Govt. to implement safety measures ... they are wating for a "Mangal Shani" type of a muhurtham to do this.. and that too depending on the mood .. mind you, the past is a clear evidence of what and how much the govt. has done, irrespective of the nature of the situation
. No wonder we are made a mockery of all this from every quarter .. be it in the country or otherwise. ONLY if it seriously contemplated such tragedies would not have been seen. There is no respect for human life ... they are treated worst than cattle.

Why the name of this Private Bus Company is withheld by Police. If people come to know which is this Bus company then they can think twice before travelling by that Bus next time which has no proper safety precautions.
