Mangaluru: Private bus, truck collide at Nanthoor - Two dead, many injured

Mangaluru, Nov 26: Two persons died and nearly 15 others were injured after a fish laden truck collided with a private bus at Nanthoor here on Wednesday November 26.

The deceased have been identified as Umanath (21), a student of Karnataka Polytechnic (KPT) here, and Ganesh, a cleaner of another bus.

The Nishmitha Travels bus was plying from Naravi to Mangaluru while the truck was moving towards Nanthoor from KPT when the accident took place.

The exact cause for the accident is not known, but sources said that the bus was moving at a high speed.

The passengers used the emergency exit in the bus to get out, sources said. Most of them escaped with bruises.

The injured were rushed to AJ Hospital. Sources said that Ganesh and Umanath were brought dead.

Following the accident, traffic came to a halt at Nanthoor up till KPT junction.

Kadri traffic police arrived at the spot.

1. Road design at nanthoor junction is a complete mess.
2. NOBODY even bothers to wear a seat belt(a basic safety instrument in every car)
3. NO Drivers in mangalore knows to use the indicators nor they are aware of what the blue light on the dashboard means....the head lamps on high beam blinds the driver coming in opposite direction.
4. implement n follow the rules. they are for ur safety!!!

especially at nanthoor n KPT junction, whats the point in building such a huge circles, 'no one stops n proceeds' at these junctions.

Speed limit must regulate by RTO...speed can tune the engine itself, so we can prevent the incident. there is lots of revolution in technology.

all private buses going like flight.To prevent this type of accidents its better to follow some rules by R.T.O like speed limit,signals at main junctions and one more thing is strictly cancelling permit of bus and license of driver.And allowing some govt buses.

Plz give the permission to switch on the traffic signal lights in karavali circle, kankanady and nantoor. The traffic signal lights were installed many years ago but i dont know why they are not ready to switch it on. Its getting rusted and wasted day by day.Plz do it at the earliest.

I agree that licences of erring drivers should be cancelled immediately. The bus owners should train their staff time and again. Almost every bus driver thinks he is driving on the highway. Many drivers talk on cell phones while driving and put passengers and pedestrians at risk. Bus owned by Raviraj Motors is a danger to most of the people travelling from Pumpwell to Deralakatte. It is 51E and an Express Bus. The driver doesn't know the meaning of EXPRESS. He stops many times to pick passengers but flies like a jet. Who can help the people of Mangalore solve this major problem? IS it the Pollice? Or the R .T.O.? Or the Politicians or the Bus Owners?

Daily I am plying thru Nanthur a minimum of 10 times. It is an unscientific circle and always a nightmare also. While coming from Mangalore city towards Kulshekar, first we have to negotiate traffic going towards Kadri Hills side. Then comes a real death trap. One has to keep an eye on the Kadri Hills side for vehicles going towards Pumpwell, mean time some trailing vehicles try to overtake from either left or right. It is very difficult keep an eye on the right. Always I thank God after passing Nanthur circle for safely negotiating the circle. It is high time that the proposed under pass comes as early as possible.

my condolence to the family of deceased. Fact is that nantoor round about is very small and very unsafe for the present traffic. Our D.C SHOULD GIVE ORDERS TO INSTALL TRAFFIC SIGNAL IN THAT PARTICULAR NANTOOR ROUND ABOUT. What our govt. machinery is doing i dont know.

No traffic rules have been followed . Drivers are not in control they compit who gets more passengers . No time they give for passengers to get in and get out all is rush do not consider whether child young adult or old. Also traffic police of no use sometimes busy talking on the phone. Now the pain for all injured people , lost lives and their family's. May their soul rest in peace.

When we will have the flyover from Nanthooor for the National highway. It is high time to implement the project plans for Roads in Mangalore. British system of approaching the roundabouts have made a mess of traffic in India. If we need some safety, we better follow American system of approaching the roundabouts.

Whenever I have seen any hazardous situation on road I just whispered or say "Jesus" "Jesus" "Jesus" automatically , then I see the situation like a just near miss or no any incident. Then I Thank God for it's all safe.

This Circle is becoming very very dangerous day by day. As I often travel from here, I notice between 7.00 to 8 a.m. no policemen are seen here. As a result these drivers (all including two wheelers)drive recklessly. At around 8.15 a.m. two policemen, (some times only a short lady police)come and take up the herculean task of controlling the traffic. They really struggle hard to control the traffic full of reckless drivers. Feel this is the right time for the district administration to address the issue and save precious life of people. Think placing police here early morning might solve the problem to some extent.

The only way to stop the monopoly of private buses is to protest by boycotting them.
All govt employees(and maybe others too) who travel by private buses to work should stay at home and boycott private bus.They should demand that they will only agree to go to work if govt introduces more ksrtc city buses just like bangalore.
Empty buses,empty workplaces will put pressure on govt even if it causes inconvenience to people no problem,only for some time.
Time to unite and protest has come.

Very sad news for the unfortunate souls. May their sould in peace. One of the worst roundabouts of Mangalore. Even police don't know or doesn't want to handle the everyday chorus of this round about. A super experienced driver also doesn't understand how to drive in this round about. Our own city corporators, RTO don't even bother to look at the huge danger causing in tnis round about. But we still vote and our own political representatives.Private buses plying in Mangalore is a danger to human lives. Concerned departments please look into the matter seriously.

i suggest govt.to introduce all private buses to have ladies seats at rear side of the bus,and design a separate door only for conductor to entry for ticket issue.

There is no one to check the bus drivers or even other vehicles, who drive their vehicles carelessly,every one wants to reach first and they are the ruler of the road.Secondly there is no crossing , stop signals anywhere at the junctions,some time these drivers drive so fast in the mid city pedestrians are frightened to walk at the side of the road too. At Hampankatta, no one is there to see problems of crossing either side. Our so called leaders are least bothered.

Govt., has to immediately introduce KSRTC buses in DK & Udupi districts as in other parts of the state. In peak hours during 7am to 10am in the morning and from 4pm to 8pm in the evening KSRTC can run double deckers buses to reduce the overcrowd.

Education doesn't make difference in India as much as following rule is concerned. It is sense of fear that makes difference.. be it fear of accident or fear of law.

Forget alone traffic rules, Indians hardly follow any rules in India but they abide every minor rule as soon as they land in foreign country especially in Gulf. Dog’s tail can never be straightened at least in India.

the bus coming from KPT & has to go to KAdri he should be on right then take a right & go but this bus comes on extreme left & then comes completely right blocking all the vehicle's going towards Kulesshkar Or pompwell.Now whom are you blaming Govt??Traffic police just stands & say Hi to the driver instead of stopping him.

Two more lives lost due to the apathy of our elected reps. I was told that because it is a highway they cannot have signal lights, speed breakers etc. at this junction because sanction has to be obtained from delhi. Meanwhile another stupid project has been planned for this junction which is a underpass that will connect the north south road. This project ignores the traffic that will come from bikarnakatte to panambur side and kadri/mangalore to bikarnkatte side. This will increase the chaos here.
Time to think of constructing a bypass road outside the city to link the industrial zone surathkal/panambur) to bangalore. The people of mangalore are only worried of traffic jams but are insensitive to the dangers posed by this badly designed road to the public that live besides it. See the right angle turn at Nanthoor to bikarnakatte and see how a bullet tanker tries to manoeuvre this junction.
Vehicles with hazardous cargo ply on this road that passes thru densly populated areas like surathkal,kottara,nanthoor,bikarnakatte,padil,bantwal etc. All the people who live /study/work or pass by are at great risk not only to accidents but also to the heavy dust/chemical/noise pollution. In the name of infrastructure do not destroy human lives.
A bypass road is the only low cost solution that is if you consider human lives valuable.

Blame game and frustration is not a solution to the pathetic solution on roads.
It is very essential to look at the reality and facts which have worsened the situation on roads.
In fact, less than 20% of vehicles are forced to meet more than 80% of transport demand of rapidly growing volume of commuters and goods. And 80% of vehicles simply occupy the roads and parks by meeting a minimum transport demand which makes the situation miserable.
The need is to increase the capacities of vehicles instead of mushrooming tiny vehicles on roads.
If there are adequate public vehicles the speed, frequencies and transport services can be easily controlled, regularized and disciplined.

Drivers are expected to give way to vehicles coming from the right side. Many accidents have happened at this junction only because vehicles plying from Kulshekar side towards Hampankatta do not stop at the Nanthoor junction to give way for vehicles coming from the right side (i.e from KPT). A hump in front of High Point Apartments could be a solution to break the speed. If licences of erring drivers were cancelled, I am sure all drivers would be careful.

There is no proper traffic and road planning. This place badly needs a flyover but instead they have built a one way flyover in Bikaranakatte which is empty most of the time. Also, only in this area I have seen so many one way flyovers. There is one in Kulur, Surathkal and BC road and all are one way flyovers which does not make any sense. I don't know what these ministers who go on study tours to foreign countries study? just wasting money.
Adding to it is the bruteness of private bus drivers who think they are the kings in the road. And it seems there is no one to control them in spite of so many accidents. Their menace is growing day by day. Hope the city administration takes note before many other lives are lost.

For those who lost lives RIP and God give their family the strength to overcome this terrible tragedy.

People don't differentiate highway and service roads. Who gets in first to the main road is the clever person! Because of this if someone else has to suffer(either apply break or stop). There is no awareness at all. Getting license is so easy here! Training instructor while on duty seems to be ignorant while training their trainees about the road safety measures . Left signal is not mandatory at all for many commutators. Lane discipline - many of us may not know what it is. The rules should be made more stringent and awareness should be spread through various forms. In many occasions such kind of tragic incidents can be avoided by having good road sense.

Yet another Major Accident at this Nanthoor Junction, taking away lives of 2. The main cause for these accidents is the New roundabout introduced at this junction. Prior to this, there were No Major Accidents at all at this Junction.
These Private Bus Owners must be hanged to death. They are just least bothered of other people lives on roads!! They drive as though they are the Kings of the roads & dominating the other vehicles!! Serious actions should be taken against all Bus Drivers..

In the first place our traffic system is so weak,one cannot even imagine.Adding to this even some uncultured public without any manners.Over and above whoops!! auto drivers and two wheeler riders,they make the traffic more worst due to their rude approaches and rash driving on the road when they are driving.Behavior of City and private Bus drivers is another story and mind blowing because of their collection and competition.I had seen many times most of the Express,city bus drivers are very rude and reckless.They are playing on the lives of the passengers,thinking that they are the kings of the roads while they are on their wheel.Talking on mobile continuously while driving is another nuisance.
Well in this particular accident wherein two passengers were killed,even lay man come to the conclusion that this is mistake of bus driver and his negligence and over speeding,which is very dangerous.Now who should be responsible or blamed and pay the price for the life of the deceased and injured? Bus driver,Bus owner or passengers?Losers are the parents of deceased and injured.
I Pray to Almighty to grant eternal peace to the souls of the deceased and speedy recovery of the injured.Also I offer my heartfelt and sincere condolence to the family members of the deceased and let God again grant them enough strength and energy to overcome this irreparable loss.RIP

Govt., has to immediately introduce KSRTC buses in DK & Udupi districts as in other parts of the state. In peak hours during 7am to 10am in the morning and from 4pm to 8pm in the evening KSRTC can run double deckers buses to reduce the overcrowd.

The authorities concerned should rein in the errant drivers before it is too late. The city buses ply on the roads terrorising the other motorists and scooterists.They are seen scaring most of the female drivers. The traffic department has to be vigilant to control this menace of city buses and their drivers.

It is 100% negligence of bus driver, we have seeing daily their hurry on the road making other life mesarable while driving, book the case against bus driver if he is alive and owner those never bothered about passenger safety. and cancel their license life time.even the traffic police stand in the circle these bus drivers wont bother, police dept better concentrate on these buses instead of catching two wheeler only.

This is the worst roundabout in Mangalore, From Nanthoor to Mangalore city (SBI), honking & speeding, Every time you think it's going to get moving and take you somewhere, you hit another jam and cops are no way to be found, it is a never ending story...

If u respect traffic rules you & public will also be safe. you don't respect traffic rules, then how can you expect safe journey, every minute on the road road users on the threat. Bus Driver is fully aware of the situation at Nanthoor junction, driving at over speed at morning peak hours means utter carelessness. Here NH Authority, MCC & Govt of Karnataka & P.W.D engineers are No.1 Criminals for not providing infrastructure facility to developing city like Mangalore. For politicians except Bangalore other cities in Karnataka is not much importance. Cry for separate State is more meaning full in this circumstances.

Main cause may be new circle, in past also many accident is seen in the same spot after making circle. Only the solution is need flyover for highway.

It is high time that the administrators think about introducing govt buses within city limits. All these incidents happen due to fight between private buses for better collection. The safety of passengers is not considered at all.

This year many accidents happened at this junction. There are no Humps at any sides. What the MP is Doing? where is MLA ? or Jilla ustuwari Minister....
all just go for stupid inauguration and other activities.
One more Rajyasabha Member also sleeping ...
there certainly required humps so the speed limit will be under control....

This is the effect of most of the private buses appointed unskilled,untrained employees for low salary. The same problem in private Hospitals, Educational institutions etc.

This is very bad….. Parents and family members of these two deceased might have thinking that our beloveds are gone for college or work but to their mere surprise they gone for good!!! Let us pray together for eternal peace for their souls. These Private Bus Owners always fights for fare increase but never bother about safety of the passenger….. Govt should implement strict policy in case of passenger death due to negligence

It's better to convert all roundabout junctions to traffic signalled junctions. In the absence of proper traffic education, every driver thinks that he has the right of way at roundabout and these types of accidents will be common. Wishing all injured, a speedy recovery.
