Dubai, Nov 20 (IANS): An Indian man in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been sentenced to three years in jail for strangling his wife to death under the influence of liquor after suspecting that she had an extramarital affair, media reported.
The 33-year-old storekeeper, S.S., had a heated argument with his wife over her alleged extramarital affair with another man, the Gulf News reported Wednesday.
The man killed her at their residence in Bur Dubai and turned himself in to the police in August 2013.
The Dubai Appeal Court upheld S.S.'s three years' imprisonment, rejecting prosecutors' appeal to stiffen the punishment.
The Dubai Court of First Instance in July sentenced the defendant to three years in jail followed by deportation.
He was also fined 3,000 dirhams (about $800) for consuming alcohol.
Prosecutors appealed the primary ruling and sought a tougher punishment.
Presiding judge Saeed Salem Bin Sarm Wednesday rejected the prosecutors' appeal and upheld the primary verdict.
He had entered a not guilty plea and denied any intention of killing his wife.
The defendant said that they had a dispute and he suspected she had cheated on him.
