HC clears obstacles in observing Made Snana at Subrahmanya

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Nov 20: The state high court (HC), in a relief to hundreds of devotees who had taken a vow to perform Made Made Snana at Subrahmanya temple during the annual festival in return for favours received from Lord Subrahmanyeshwara in the form of boons and cure of skin diseases, paved way for performing this ritual this year.

There had been question mark on the continuance of this traditional method of austerity performed by devotees, after various organizations and thinkers alike had called for enforcing a ban on the ritual, terming it as a kind of cast-based discrimination.

In its order dated Wednesday November 19, the state HC said Made Made Snana Snana be performed at Subrahmanya temple for three days from November 25 to 27 (Margasheera Shuddha Chowti to Shashti) when annual car festival will be held. The Made Made Snana, which entails rolling of people on left overs of food consumed by Brahmins in the temple precincts, had been in vogue here since the last five centuries.

The high court, in 2012, had ordered for replacing the age old system with Yede Snana (rolling on food offered to the Lord that has not been served or consumed). Aadivasi Budakattu Hitarakshana Samiti had filed a petition seeking review of the above verdict of the high court.

A bench of the high court presided by Justice N Kumar and Justice B V Nagaratna, observing that Made Made Snana is a custom that has been in vogue at the said temple since long, felt that suspending the rituals abruptly might hurt religious sentiments and rights of the people.

The bench also observed that people from all castes and religions are allowed to take part in this ritual, and that no one is forced to either take this vow or participate in it. After observing that no discrimination is being practised while performing this ritual, the bench permitted for the resumption of Made Made Snana commencing this year.

The bench also stayed operation of a November 8, 2012 order of the high court which had proposed to replace Made Made Snane with Yede Snana in tune with a proposal put forth by the state government then, and permitted devotees to continue to perform Made Made Snana.

The bench observed that if religious rituals that are practised since ages are stayed one after the other sighting one or the other reason, a time may come in which people might approach courts to stop even the practice of taking holy dip in River Ganga. If it is felt that Made Made Snana is uncivilized, the concerned can try to spread awareness about it rather than forcing to place a ban on it, the bench said.

My post was not 'religion biased', but on the specific news matter on how self anointed Saints and Godmen dupe the gullible, I did not mean to exclude anyone from that Benny or anybody else is another issue altogether just do not understand why you immediately jump to religion every time! For your info, I do not believe in organized religion, and a self styled Godman from any of them is dubious and should be shunned before he becomes a 'monster'!!

If someone goes to church and mosque, it is not blind belief... Also they eat unhygenic roadside food in Santhmary & Urus, but still you do not talk abut disease....
But if someone goes to temple, bhootha, kola, you call it as blind belief...
Someone rolls on the leftover meal, you remember disease.....

Take it sportively, if you can not take it religiously....
By the way, so far nobody got disease by this ritual....

Blind believes existed in Hindu religion since centuries. If any one doesn’t want to practice that no one will force him, same as no one has the right to ask others not to follow that belief. Following any belief is purely based on particular person’s perception.

it is just a question of faith. we are nagaradhakas and beleive this land belongs to them. all Nagaradhana places like Kukke, Manjeshwar, Kudupu, Santoor, Sooda to name a few, have these practices!

there are two types.. Made Made snana (on eaten leaves) and Dhooli Made snana! (plain dhooli of tempel sannidhana).. both are offered in faith and by all , yes, including Upper castes and whatever other castes. it is in return to a Skin disease or SANTATI (cos Naga - a Serpent God - part of RAHU is considered to be Karaka for progeny and if he is angry, he will remember it for years together) ... so, to please him devotees offer Made snana...

all this including naga bali, Ashlesha bali, Nagamandala, Dhakke bali, predominantly seen in Konkan region, has history going back until Mahabharata- parikishita-takshaka- janamejaya etc days! ...

It is as old as, Haj Pilgrims, throwing stones at a pole to get rid of shaitaan!... so, avaravara Bhakutige avarava bhavakke! if you dont want to do it (made snana), fine! dont do it.. it is not hard and fast rule like Munni madime... :)

    Mr/Mrs.N.M,Mangalore
There are lot of other ways to educate the people about superstitious beliefs.Another thing notable here is why in our soceity only Hindu beliefs are subject matter for discussion and noot other religions.Let us agree your preposition about made snana...but what loss will be there if few devotees roll over for made snana which is being practiced since years in their belief that it will purify them by doing the ritual. It is only a belief.no doubt.I do not whether you are hindu or muslim or christian. When Christians are fond of eating pork why Muslims abandon it as unaspicious.Christans have no such problem and consume pork abundently.I have seen in Hassan region in our state where ever people encounter a pig touching their vehicle,it is felt that most unauspicious and they will not retain such vehicles and sell. Why muslim women wear burka and what is the need fot it when women from other religion do not prefer it.Why muslim wimen forbudden entering mosque along with men for prayers. Is it unauspecious? It is belief and practice since ages. Why one should discuss about it hurt the religion people. Why Christian Priest wash devotees feet on the previous day of Good Friday? Is it hygene? Why not discussed by forward thinkers?
Recently in Mangalore much is talked about widow worshiping in the temple by politicians. They are appointed in the temple to perform poojas. But I wonder why they should be confined inside the temple for poojas only. Why none of the so called leaders who advocated this practice never ever utilsed wedow priests service for ceremonies like their childrens marriage, opening new business venture or laying foundation stone for their new mega apartments in Mangalore etc?Talks will go on like this.....those who preach never practice...preaching only for third parties not for self..is is not hypocracy? There for let the people enlghten themselves about practicies they believe.Let others not poke their nose in those matters.

Agree there are many still unexplained things, but they are connected with Mother Nature and not with any of these 'humiliating' ritual which no doubt were created by the rich and powerful to control and exploit the gullible from his life to his death by inducing the 'fear factor'!!

It is another thing that there is no dearth of dumb people who can follow the most 'stupidest' of rituals blindly!!

Just read the fresh case of one Mr. Rampal, the way he created a fortress by fooling the innocent and even holding them hostage!! There also it is reported that he used to be given bath in milk and the kheer prepared from this milk would be served to the gullible as prasad containing divine powers, and this guy was a very powerful and rich chap that it took so much of effort even with full force of the state to smoke him out of the hole!!! Jai Hind!!

Rudolf, One has to either believe in science and be rational or a follower of religion!.. One cant ively, choose a particular religion and go on hammer and tong!.. thats what is happening here.

Ash wednesday (shindicho budhwar) doesnt make sense to many. many dont trust one would come back alive from death... many dont beleive God has spoken to any person, cos many Scientists are Rtionale and athiests!... they wont believe in God unless you show them with proper evidence or they feel Him!

so no point in seeing this with Scientific prism..cos for science, everything you say "religious" is blind belief only!..

for example Jews and Muslims do cicumcision or genital mutilation.. any other religion wont say it.. if cleanliness is the reason, we wld be better off cutting our nose or posterior too.. its their belief, so be it.. until they dont come to me with a knife, I am fine. God made us perfect, there is no need to make us more perfect! and definitely there are more humans who didnt do this at any give time and who are safe in all possible ways.. get it?

there is no humiliation.. Humilation is what MANUAL SCAVENGING is.. cos, it is targetting lower strata of society and making them do filthy job, for our satisfaction and I am sure, all religions preferred only dalits to do this manual scavenging... Untouchability is another such... we should STOP it.. rather than stopping one particular faiths custom..

Question: What have to say about the 'Devadasi' system which is still practiced unabated and nobody has to tell you where these girls land ultimately and how horrendous their end is??

So also, most of these 'bizarre' rituals were formulated and started by the rich, powerful, and intelligent to keep the mediocre people suppressed!!

There is a saying "Mediocre minds blindly follow, whereas intelligent ones Wonder and Question, such should be the quality of a person who uses his brains and thinks logically rather than going with the herd!!!

It is high time that age old traditions created by 'vested interests' in the name of the 'divine' and 'Gods' to dominate, loot and control the gullible, innocent, downtrodden be questioned and eradicated slowly from the system!! Rational thought and scientific temper should be inculcated in children right from a tender age so they do not fall for blind faith, rituals, miracles, etc. etc.!! Children should be taught to be intelligent and 'question' and 'wonder' rather than be mediocre and follow blindly only then the coming generations will get out of such shackles and get enlightened!!
