Indian women swamp Afghanistan to march into SAFF semis


Islamabad, Nov 17 (IANS): The Indian women's football team thrashed a hapless Afghanistan 12-0 in their final Group A match to march into the semi-finals of the third SAFF women's championship here Monday.

If recording convincing wins against Maldives and Bangladesh was not enough, India humiliated Afghanistan with a ruthless performance.

Striker Bala Devi extended her scoring form with another five goals, (4th minute, 12th, 33rd, 38th, 83rd) while forwards Prameshwori (28th, 47th, 68th) and Indumathi Devi (3rd, 6th, 51st) registered hat-tricks either side of halftime.

Mandakini Devi joined the party late with a strike in the 88th minute to complete the rout.

India led 8-0 at the interval.

Bala Devi has now scored 11 goals in three matches while India have found the back of the net 25 times letting in just once in the last match against Bangladesh.

India will take on Sri Lanka Wednesday in the semis.
