K’taka, Goa SITs join hands to probe illegal mining


Panaji, Nov 17 (TNN): The special investigation team (SIT) attached to Karnataka Lokayukta and Goa police's SIT, which was established to conduct investigation into illegal mining cases, have joined hands to take illegal mining cases to their logical conclusion by sharing information about illegal mining in Goa and Karnataka.

Goa SIT have registered 15 criminal cases of illegal mining. Out of the 15 cases, chargesheet has been filed in one case and three cases involving transportation of ore have been sent back to concerned police stations to investigate further.

As of now 28 criminal cases of illegal mining have been registered pertaining to illegal mining and exports made through Belikere port in Karnataka and other illegal mining issues as revealed by the enquiry conducted by the Karnataka Lokayukta through Karnataka SIT.

Karnataka SIT in a letter to the Goa SIT said that in order to investigate the cases of illegal mining entrusted to them, it is essential to be in the know of the illegal mining cases pertaining to the minerals of Karnataka state that are being investigated by other investigating agencies.

"It is requested to provide information regarding the jurisdiction of the SIT of Goa police and the nature of cases that are being taken up for enquiry or investigation," Karnataka SIT officer said in the letter.

Karnataka SIT officer also said that Karnataka SIT will be willing to share information regarding the cases of illegal mining being investigated by SIT, Karnataka, if need arises for SIT of Goa police.

Goa SIT officer said that they have replied to the Karnataka SIT assuring them of full cooperation and support from their unit.

Recently, Karnataka SIT had conducted searches at the Panaji offices of Sesa Goa, presently known as Sesa Sterlite, a Vedanta group company, and Salgaocar Mining Industries Pvt Ltd (SMI) at Altinho, Panaji, owned by former Sanvordem MLA Anil Salgaocar and seized documents pertaining to iron ore extracted from mines in Bellary, Karnataka, and exported through various ports to study the documents to ascertain actual illegal exports.
