Riyadh, Nov 16: Konkan Ghar Riyadh (KGR) successfully held its annual sports meet 2014 and children’s day while commemorating the birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, in Riyadh on November 14.
The day commenced with traditional south Indian Breakfast, idly vada and sajjige bajil. The gathered crowd was then segregated into four houses (teams); Red House, Green House, Yellow House and Blue House. Each house then selected its own captain.
The sports meet kick started with welcome address by Eric D'sa, Pangla, expressing his appreciation to all members and sponsors for their support and attendance in large numbers on the day.
The sports event was inaugurated keeping the traditional practice by lighting the lamp by the guests and the KGR representatives. Maria Mathias Shirva and Anita Eric D'sa Pangla led the gathering into prayer befitting the occasion. Sports meet oath was recited by Edmond Lewis Sastan.
The classic sport parade led by the captains of the four houses with their respective team members to the march-fast beat added color to the sport meet.
Sports meet hit the ground with a game ‘throwing the balls in the basket’ for the children below seven years of age. 100 meter race was the other event that was conducted for the same age group.
Children between the age group of 07 - 12 years and children above 12 years of age took part in 100 meter race and hitting goal.
Ladies very actively took part in ‘Lemon in Spoon race’. Men and women enthusiastically participated in ‘Shotput throw and sack race’.
During the post lunch session, sponsors were honored in the ceremony by presenting KGR mementos. Three-leg-race for the couples was the game of the day that drew attention and applause from the crowd.
Group games were the special attractions of the evening, as it created lots of healthy tension, vigor and team spirit between the four houses. ‘Dodging the ball, newspaper walk relay, filling the bottle with water relay and tug of war were the games that stimulated lots of fun and entertainment.
Amitha Royston Prabhu Bijai kept the children busy throughout the day with her innovative games.
In between all these activities, there was a special attraction ‘Guessing the watermelon's weight’. Austin Menezes Miyar took away the watermelon for guessing its approximate weight.
Sports presentation and valedictory ceremony proficiently conducted by Eric D'sa. First, second and third place winners, both, in the individual as well as group category, were invited to the victory stand and were felicitated with gold, silver and bronze medals and bouquets. Team trophies were also given away to the winning teams.
The house championship was won by Green house with 37 points while the first runner up was secured jointly by Red house and Yellow house with 33 points each. Blue house finished their point tally with 21 points.
Registration counter at the event was well organized by Roland D’souza Kalmadi and his team.
The scorer Alwyn D'Souza Niddodi did an excellent job by keeping track of the score and Nagaraj Bajal Anchan, the master mind behind the sport meet, coordinated the entire sport meet.
Kiran Machado Mangalore, captured the event with his fabulous photography, While Manoj Aranha Shirva and Salvador Fernandes Moodbidri, video graphed the whole event. Uday Rodrigues Mangalore played a dual role as an anchor and a DJ.
To satisfy the appetite, very delicious and sumptuous meal was catered by Stanly Cardoza, Paladka. Evening Snacks, tea and soft drinks were provided to all the members.
All the members participated in the sports and enjoyed every moment without considering the age limit. All in all, the whole event which was buzzing with sport activities left thrilling memories in the hearts of each and everyone present at the sight.
