Udupi: Ban on Kambala, Supreme Court order to be followed

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (RJP)

Udupi, Nov 14: Udupi district administration has been directed to follow the ban on Kambala, ordered by the Supreme Court.

Supreme Court had ordered the ban on Kambala, the famous buffalo bull race of coastal Karnataka citing the reason of animal cruelty. The Indian animal welfare board had gone to the court demanding the ban on Kambala. The court after hearing the writ application had favoured the ban on the game.

Now state chief secretary has dispatched the copy of the verdict of the court to the district administration.

The district administration had received applications to hold Kambala events from November 15, 2014 to March 28, 2015 in different places. But within days of the planned events to take place the order of the ban has come.

The Kambala is a game played in three states of Karnataka, Maharashtra and Tamilnadu in different forms for centuries. In the undivided Dakshina Kannada, it is called Kambla and played in its own distinct style.

Various pro animal organizations have been demanding the ban on the game citing violence on animals. It is said that violence on the animals is not practiced in the region and so many modifications have taken place in the recent past to make it animal friendly.

The Supreme Court had passed the order on May 7, 2014. But the implementation has started just now as the Kambala season is about to begin.

    Always half knowledge is dangerous.
What nonsense this people are talking of, I can’t understand.
Kambala is Tulunaad’s traditional, cultural event and a free show. (Janapada Kreedey)

Let them visit to Buffalo Owner’s house & see how they treat this Animal.

They spend thousands of rupees per month to look after this animal.
They give them oil massage by hand & also they polish Buffalo’s body with soft brush every day.

    Secondly, what about the following,

a)Beating Bulls & Buffalos during ploughing - So, Ban using animal for cultivation work, provide machines to farmers.

b)Beating Bulls which pulls the Cart ( Bullock Cart) – Ban bullock cart

c)Beating Horse during Horse race – Ban Horse race

d)Hundreds of street dogs dies on roads due to rash driving - Ban driving where street dogs lives or take all street dogs & look after till its life time.

e)Ban killing all types of animals

Finally, if you have so much soft corner for any creature, then what about Human being beating themselves in the name of sports? Boxing, Karate etc.

Human can be punished in the name sport event but as a sport Animal can’t!!!

Your honour…..I am bit confused here….. Because you said…beating any animal is leads to cruelty we agree….then slaughter of animal is not cruelty? Sir you can’t bifurcate the animals on two treatments meted towards them or may be humans are always right just because animals can’t talk!!!!!

@ suleman Beary , Agree , thats good observation. Thats why i said Rules have to moderated and should b issued by court , instead of completely banning the tradition. ETHICAL PRACTICE WITH ETHICAL TREATMENT. No wipping , No hard labour in the sun , sufficient food and drinks , No pulling of its tail during race , relaxed time lines , no aged or young turks to b participated.

Killing or Saughtering Animals for food can be termed as extreme violence and unethical but not using them as part of cultural heritage. Just like horse race , just as using dogs for hunting , KAMBALA is also is a very TRADITION . Peaple should b allowed to practise with moderation of certain guidelines. Courts should stop too much intertering with peaples tradition and social practise.

Kindly try to understand the emotional attachment/feeling of a farmer towards Kambala and Buffalo. We treat them as our own family members.
We feed them, we take care of them like a small kid. and is it wrong to a take carer to punish when it is necessary?

to Animal lovers : why cant you ban the horse racing?why cat you ban TV realty shows, which is a mental torture for a kids?

One minister from Udupi yesterday says that he don't know about this ban on cattle race. Why we elect this type of irresponsible ministers at the time of voting ?

In Shirva all preparations have been done. The Event is suppose to start tomorrow at 10 AM. Who is responsible for this mess ?? If Judgment has been passed on May 7, then why communication has not sent ?

Animal Welfare assocation group, You people can see cruelty done on Animals and Birds but what about cruelty done on your /our fellow beings, so many rapes on our girls and specially on minors ?? Don't u have eyes to watchthese things happening in your society??. Kambla is traditional Sports and D.K is famous for that games and that too happens once in a year but rape and murder happnes every each minutes in our society, IF possible stop this and bring ban on these crimes. I think so now Human welfare Organisation should be handed over to Aninal Welfare Team , so that our Supreme Court hear thier pettions and impose a ban on these social Crimes. Even for a cock fighting, If we cut chicken at home that is ok , that is not cruelty but making cock fighting that is called cruelty.
I respect the supreme court verdict but same time feel bad about our D.K traditinal sports.

"KAMBALA" and "COCKFIGHTING" have been two traditional animal/bird sports of South India.Had the privilege of watching a "Kambala" race sometime in the late 1990's at Yedtali in South Kanara and was fascinated by the organisational skills and management of the local villagers.Have also watched illegal cock fights in Barkur and Sastan villages of South Kanara these villages being my parents ancestral homes.I feel that it would be difficult to totally ban "Kambla(Buffalo)" races as this is a tradition among the locals and at most the sport might become "ILLEGALLY LEGAL" akin to cockfighting !

Kambala is a yearly village sport event where horses are not reared, as they can not be used for work in our village farmlands.
The buffaloes that are used in the sport are well cared\well fed and loved too. No where cruelty is shown on these animals.
Using a stick on any animals is normal practice to guide them around and make them work better and the animals including buffaloes understand that too but some human beings with twisted minds don not understand between cruelty and managing an animal.
Do not ban this lively sport where, once a year, the whole village meets, interacts and enjoy the day with fun and frolics.
Some of these organisation and even courts have no other work but to stop this once a year festivities.
