Mangaluru, Nov 12: Even as the official spokesperson issued a rejoinder to some section of media, denying the claims of locals over the contamination of lake by Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL), massive outflow of waste from the MRPL was reported by the villagers on Wednesday creating panic among the residents of Jokatte.

It was seen that water with oil content was flowing through the stream connected to the lake. The locals alleged MRPL has left wastes from Coke and Sulphur units. However earlier the similar claim of locals was denied by the spokesperson of the MRPL saying there was no connection to the lake and MRPL.

Co-convener of Jokatte Nagarika Horata Samiti B H Moideen lamented locals have been frequenting the lake located at Meindagure, following MRPL’s pumping out of waste to lake. He alleged that the MRPL which recently halted the functioning of Coke and Sulphur units resumed the work. “The massive out flow of waste is the result of restoring the works at units”.

He claimed that he never before has witnessed such huge quantity of waste being left-out from the MRPL. Though resistance exhibited by the locals under the banner of Jokatte Nagarika Horata Samiti, the MRPL were least bothered on health issues cropped up at Jokatte. He told locals would protest against this move of the company.

DYFI state president Muneer Katipalla speaking to daijiworld told he was on the way to the spot to check the claims of locals. It could be recalled that he was majorly involved in organizing protests against MRPL for causing alleged pollution by the company in the vicinity of Jokatte. “This is a usual behavior by the officials of the company. As the protests intensifies they retaliate in this way”

He told he would consider the issue very seriously and decide appropriate move against untoward incident by the MRPL. It could be observed that official spokesperson of the MRPL and DYFI president exchanged allegations among themselves recently.

The MRPL spokeperson while contacted by daijiworld promised to talk later on the issue.

This is the price of Development at the cost of environment. A rethink of this has to be done by the BJP leaders who are harping on Development model.

    Dear Mangaloreans,

Please send complaints to ISO on MSSComplaints@iso.org to revoke MRPL's ISO certification as they are no longer complying to it by discharging effluents and causing pollution. Else we may not have a Mangalore anymore.

MRPL /BASF / MCF the 3 major poison spewing industries in McCain limits have to be shifted to remote areas ASAP. The management / owners have no concern for the environment nor the health of the community.. Unfortunately the locals here protest for the wrong reasons based on caste and community. The few protests that take place in front of these factories die a natural death the moment money and job's are offered. Only a PIL or a legal action with proof of polluted water or deaths due to cancer that occurred in surrounding areas can shut down these factories. In India the politicians and burecrats collude with businessmen and we commoners suffer.

These big companies are polluting our beautiful hometown. And they are expanding day by day in their territory / pollution. They are making surrounding people to vacate slowly with all these troubles. And we people will be happy to protest/comment only on political issues. Daiji would have had 100 plus comments if the news was related against any Cow dung or Romantic policing.

Mangaloreans letting their own lands and ground water and air be poisoned in the name of development.

What did the people of Mangalore think when a petroleum refinery was set up in their vicinity, that it would emit fresh air and clean water ?. The refinery along with the SEZ is a environmental disaster for our region. Our clean environment which our ancestors handed over to us from thousands of years, we have managed to destroy.

Not to worry, politicians have made money, contractors have made money, real estate people have mande money all in the name of development. Now people are left with their own lands and ground water being poisoned....

No developed country lets a new refinery to be built, just check.
