Mangaluru, Nov 12: President of district Kannada Sahitya Parishad Pradeep Kumar Kalkura formally launched new project of drafting a Beary-Kannada-English dictionary under the editorship of Professor B M Ichlumgodu.
The work on writing dictionary that would contain as many as 30,000 Beary words will be unveiled for the public use after a year. However the project will commence very soon and experts will work towards materializing the project. This will be brought under the banner of Beary Sahitya Academy.
Addressing the gathering Kalkura congratulated all the members of the Academy for coming up with the project. “The dictionary would preserve the language and would facilitate to promote Beary culture”.
He opined currently the generation lack knowledge on regional and mother tongue. The generation is sadly swayed by the English and do not have idea of sanctity of their mother tongue.
However he contemplated that the generation in coming years would start to speak their respective languages due to the efforts of many regional language academies.
The Editor of the dictionary B M Ichlumgodu expressed the step by the academy was a significant one. The dictionary would throw light on Beary culture and showcase the richness of the language. He told now the words in the dictionary were stipulated to 30,000 but with the efforts of many he can add 20,000 more.
During the occasion A V Navada was feted by the academy. President of Beary Sahitya Academy B A Mohammad Haneef, Former Rajya Sabha member B Ibrahim, Registrar of Beary Sahitya Academy Umarabba and others were present.
