Udupi, Nov 12:  Two gold shop owners in Udupi were detained by police based on the statement of two convicted thieves.

After a bench warrant from Karwar Judicial Court, Udupi police brought two thieves from Karwar jail who were convicted in various theft cases reported in Udupi, Manipal, Malpe and Kundapur.

The two convicted thieves are Manjunath(31), resident of Homhalli, Karwar and Manjunath(22), resident of Karwar.

It is allegedly said that when police inquired with the two convicted thieves regarding the theft, they revealed that they had stolen jewelleries from various places in the limits of Udupi police station. They later sold these stolen jewelleries to Thirumala Jewellers and Shri Mangala Jewellers in Udupi.

After taking the statements from the thieves, police detained Gangadhar, owner of Thirumala Jewellers and M P Jagadish, owner of Shri Mangala Jewellers.

People who lost their jewelleries by theft had gathered in police station demanding to get back their stolen jewelleries.

Condemning the detention of owner of jewellery shops, Udupi Gold Dealers Association gathered in Udupi police premises demanding the release of two arrested gold jewellery owners.

The suspected nexus between thieves and jewellers is yet to be exposed.

More details are awaited.

Police are only big criminals. They are not here to help people. They want only bribe. How can the police arrest a business man without any proof? If a jewellery owner buys or sell gold he will give bill .. Now where is the bill ? Does the thief has the bill as proof ? Police is not producing him to court because he wants bribe . This is happening from many years. Jewellery owner can't even lodge complaint if someone robbers from their shop because police wants thier share of money if they catch the thief . Again the shop owner has to produce thier Jewell's in court which might take another 5 to 6 years in court. Jewellery shop owners are the sufferers here.

How the shopkeeper know that, seller of gold is thieves or not..? What would be the solutions..? Looks like should detain the customer who come to sell the gold and inform the police? or one police should sit in every shop to watch the thieves to come and hold him on spot..? Then wt to do..? even shop keep tells, he not purchased gold.. they not believe! or Can't take action on police for not catching thieves for so long time.(in some case 10 year old thieves comes)...!

these Kasargod people smuggle a lot of gold... Whom do they sell? any idea?!! ...

and why cops keeping the jewellers in "DETENTIOn" and NOT ARRESTING" if they r so sure?

this looks like to malign, a few businessmen in Udupi? (any political connection).. cos if they r 70 as someone said here, I am sure, they have come up with their hardwork and am sure, they will not buy gold from these 20-30 something theives!! there should be a investigation... I have lost faith in karnataka police, after few recent incidences.. cos they r quick to investigate school teachers, on anonymous call and they will shield, culrptis, even if there is a kidnap of a MINOR girl and mysterious death, with NO ARREST!! kaala kaljiga...

Police believe the thieves and not the people who are living in city for so long time. If next time some thief some jewellery shop and tell they sold the gold to that shop, that shop owner have to give gold to Police..? What proof thieve or police have against the jewellery shop owner..? only the saying of Thieves..? if such law allowed, no one will do gold business. Let the police sell the kidney or eye of the thieves and recover the money. Why to recover money from decent and obident businessman..

Usually, the Jewelers do not involve themselves in such business unless and otherwise the seller is known to them.
Very difficult to believe which side of the story is true or false but investigators surly will break the clue.

its all false allegation on jewellery shop owners. Now a days jewellerys shop owners wont buy gold from anyone. They only exchange old gold with new gold. Police believes theifs and wont believe registered dealers who are residing in Udupi from so many years. Both jewellery shop owners(one is around 70 years and another around 50 years) having BP and Sugar, but till now 2.45 pm they are not taken for medical check up even though they are arrested on 8pm yesterday.

    @ Manoj...
If I agree that the old gold will be exchanged with new. I don't agree why there is a verification in the first place about person who sells it. At least whether he is a local, his know abouts or at least the behavior or body language. I don't buy the argument is the jewelers being in the business for so many years are still in experienced in buying or exchanging old gold or gold ornaments.
