Mangaluru, Nov 12: Friends of Lawry have instituted this award in memory of their friend, late Lawrence Pinto, who fought for the emancipation of the downtrodden, through the Trade Union Movement, throughout his life. The award will be named ‘Lawrence Pinto Human Rights Award’.
This award will be given in the name of the late Lawrence Pinto, every year.
An individual or an institution working for the upliftment of the downtrodden by organising, educating and empowering the oppressed to fight for and obtain justice, be it in the field of trade union, social, economic or political fields will be eligible for this award.
Anyone active in these movements and who has contributed considerably, irrespective of the person’s gender, religion, region, linguistic grouping or any other variety, will be considered for the award.
A panel has been appointed for the purpose. It will select one worthy winner every year. The award consists of a cash amount of Rs 1 lac, a memento, a citation and public honour.
The award will be awarded at ceremony on the first Sunday of January, every year.
The first ‘Lawrence Pinto Human Rights Award’ ceremony will be held on Sunday, January 4, 2015, at 5.30 p.m., at Kalaangann, Mangalore.
A press conference was organized in Press Club to tell about the award ceremony. Loy Noronha, chairman, Eric Ozario, secretary, Louis Pinto , joint treasurer, Walter Veigas, joint treasurer and Prem Tellis, committee member of Friends of Lawry were present.
Friends of Lawry invites applications or recommendations with full details of work and achievements of the person or institution. It should reach by Nov. 30, 2014.
