Bengaluru, Nov 2: Home Minister K.J. George has urged the school managements to take up safety measures to prevent sexual assaults of children and assured that action will be taken against culprits as per the law.
“This is not a banana republic, we cannot order for encounters of the rapists. One has to abide with the laws of the land, and the law will take its own course to bring the culprits to book,” he remarked.
The Minster was answering to questions raised by citizens at a public grievance meeting in Bengaluru where the Police Commissioner M.N. Reddi and other senior police officials were also present on Friday.
“These incidents are taking place inside the school. I request the school managements to take precautionary measures to ensure that such incidents do not happen anymore. The staff and parents of every school going children should conduct meetings periodically to ensure safety of children,” he added.
Later on Saturday, the home minister in a press conference in Madikeri said “Police department in collaboration with the education department and women and child development department are in the process of finding reasons for the recent developments. Instead of making these departments responsible for all these things, we should make sure that culprits are punished.”
He also said that the expert committee to suggest the measures for the safety of women and children headed by M C Nanaiah will give its report very soon. And the recommendations of the committee will be strictly followed.
“The government has already brought measures to curb the occurrences of rapes in the state and police are efficiently working on the same. There are some legal hurdles as the school managements have gone to court against the government in relation to some directives to be followed in private schools. But as the school teachers themselves are involved in few instances of the crimes recently, serious thought should be given for the change in their mindset and attitude” K J George said.
