Mangalore, Oct 30: A leg of Mithun (16), a resident of Padubidri and working for a canteen in Bykampady, was crushed when he was trying to cross the highway near Bykampady here on Wednesday October 29. He suffered for over an hour on the highway as the 108 ambulance service failed to reach the spot, and locals did not come to his rescue, apprehensive of getting entangled in legal procedures.
Mithun was crossing the road when he fell to the road after a Honda Activa two-wheeler what was being driven negligently knocked him down. As soon as he fell down, tyres of a tipper truck moved on his leg, crushing it instantly.
The auto rickshaw drivers on the spot called government's 108 ambulance service. The ambulance vehicle failed to arrive on the spot even after an hour. Although the youth was bleeding and pleading for help, no one came forward to help him for fear of getting caught in web of legal procedures. After about an hour, a person moving towards the citystopped his vehicle and took the youth to a hospital in his car.
The locals got angry at the fact that the ambulance failed to appear on the scene even after one hour. A local named Harish called MLA, Mohiuddin Bava, and complained to him about the apathy of the ambulance service. The MLA immediately asked the traffic police to look into the matter. He also asked them to make suitable arrangement for an ambulance to get parked in Bykampady as it happens to be an industrial area and incidence of accidents is high there.
