Bantwal, Oct 26:
The driver of a car died, and eight others suffered injuries of varying degrees, after a KSRTC bus collided with the vehicle in which they were travelling head on at Mittoor on Mani-Mysore state highway on Sunday October 26.
The accident occurred when a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus was trying to overtake a private bus, and in the process, hit a Chevrolet Enjoy car coming from opposite side. Driver of the car, identified as Naufal (25), son of Yakub from Padil, Mangalore, who suffered deep injuries to his chest, died while being taken to a hospital. Naufal's mother, Zubaida (66), children, Navid (14), Nafiya (16), and relatives, Ashfaq (29), and Ashfaq's wife, Nauseena (25), suffered serious injuries. All of them were admitted into a private hospital in the city.
KSRTC bus driver, Pushparaj Shetty, and conductor, Jayaram Rai, were also injured in the accident. Both of them got admitted into the government hospital at Puttur. A bus passenger named Tejaswini too got injured and got admitted into a hospital.
The bus was moving towards Mangalore from Puttur, when it hit a car in which Naufal was moving to Madikeri to visit a relative living there, with family members. The spot where the accident occurred has been identified as an accident spot because of blind and steep curve near the Mittoor mosque. The people said repeated pleas to vacate a earthen mound that blocks the view of drivers approaching the spot as a measure to avoid accidents here have fallen on deaf ears.
The car came to a stop after rotating due to the impact of the collision after turning to the opposite direction. The front portion of the bus was also badly manged, and the bus also deviated sharply from its course.
As a result of the accident, traffic on the road was severely affected. Vittal police later visited the spot and arranged for restoration of traffic. Circle inspector, Belliappa, and Vittal station house officer, Raghavendra T R visited the spot and supervised the arrangements.
