Kundapur: Nature's beauty of Maravanthe to become history soon

Daijiworld Media Network—Kundapur (CLP)

Kundapur, Oct 25: After the long-awaited conversion of the highway stretch into a four-lane, the natural beauty of Maravanthe is going to remain only in memories.

The task of removing trees standing alongside the stretch of the national highway 66 between Karwar and Kundapur is underway. A number of trees which lived here for hundreds of years are being chopped off.

The trees like Devadaru, Akeshiya, May flower, Gali, Ala, Goli and many more trees have just disappeared. We can only show the pictures of the trees to the future generation which is indeed saddening.

Maravanthe is a village near Kundapura with most beautiful beaches in the region. NH-66 runs right next to the beach and the Souparnika River flows on the other side of the road, creating a spectacular scenery and considered only one of its kind in India. The river Souparnika which almost touches Arabian Sea here, makes a U turn and goes westward to join the Sea only after a journey of more than 10 kilometers.

The heat waves of National Highway 66 Widening has reached Maravanthe. Souparnika river is partially closed. Highway widening has strongly affected the tourism.
In the name of development, we are committing large scale atrocities against mother nature. It endures all the abuse silently. We also have to sacrifice few things for development but let us all remember that lost natural beauty can not be restored. Let us strive our best to save the maximum natural beauty for the future generation.

Please do not under estimate the power of India. Building 2 KM's flyover is nothing, compared to Mumbai Sealink porejct, Khandala project, Konkan railway poject etc.

You have misinterpreted my comments and concern. I never commented against development. When development takes place everything will improve but people make big hue & cry (destroying greenery, natural beauty etc.)
I fully support your views about people’s hardships when there is no good infrastructure and proper planning. My intention was to compare peoples view point (double standard) when tress are chopped for building construction (quiet) and when same thing carried out for the purpose road/railway line extension big hue & cry. I hope you understand me. Just check how many people understood me (Agreed)

In the widening of Highway, not only trees chopped but even houses are demolished. Is there is any alternative?.If not here some where else agriculture land land and trees will be at stake! However the authorities must take care not indulge in care less attitude and respond to certain grievances of people who are being affected.

The writer completely evaded or not researched enough to inform us what is being planned in this spot. Flyover?. Bridge on the river or pushing river to widen the road?.
Kindly detail what has been planned.

To improve Tourism the authorities must ban stopping of Heavy vehicles - Gas tankers, Trailers etc on this stretch, as they not only make space most congested but also pollute .Due to this visitors been deprived of space along side beach to park the vehicle.

I request Daiji to take up this issue seriously with concerned authorities

How many buildings have mushroomed in and around Mangalore at the cost of chopping the trees? After a few decades Mangalore would be like Mumbai. (Concrete jungle). Can any one stop such developments ?

you can talk anything from kuwait. Even though people call mangalore is concreete jungle they still buy flats in such places only. If you are really against the concreetisation then you come and live in maravanthe for some years. you will get to know how difficult here travelling & life. Please support the development simply dont talk nuisense from abroad

Most foolish idea to destroy such a wonderful and rare sangam of nature with its beautiful flora and fauna without even thinking of another idea to save it as is done in most advanced countries like an overpass/bypass!!

I think rather widening the way they could have taken this highway on the other side branch of soupernika touching padukone farm lands and Kudru have most helped. Firstly, it would have served the purpose of padukone villagers demanding for a bridge since 4 decades, this would have been the best connectivity for 'Kudru, marvanthe, Nada and many other interior places if they would have connected.
Also secondly, we would have saved the raw-beauty of the nature as it is, & in-fact would have help to attract tourism in a larger scale connecting these beautiful places.

However, I’m still convinced to the point that somehow some developments are taking place.

Development is good, however everything in this world comes with a cost. There could have been a better solution to this problem of road widening, provided our ministers would have given a alternative thought.

I see people commenting good about development and more importantly re planting tress, lives lost etc etc. However i see no one caring about the youth population that is migrating from these suburbs to cities. Is that development we would like to see.

Trust me except bangalore, overall development in rest of karnataka is shocking. These places of sea side nature beauty needs to be developed as tourisum spots.

I dont see an single person venturing to start this up the tourisum though we belong to same place. Except few commercial establishment none have interest in balance growth. Each one of us is striving to reach bangalore for employment / business.

Next generation accomodating in this sub urb is a big issue to handle....

You are right bro, DK 'having been' a very scenic place with the seas on one side and the verdant virgin Western ghats on the other side should have been mostly developed as a tourism paradise, and what with the flourishing educational facilities it would have gotten developed 'all round' in a beautiful way instead of bringing in highly polluting petrochemical and coal based power plants, the dangerous side effects of which are surfacing now and the long time inhabitants are even leaving their ancestral abodes due to the pollution menace!!

It there was a will, they could have definitely thought of an alternate idea to save this wonderful Maravanthe which is indeed priceless!!

these beautiful trees can be uprooted along with their roots and replanted in urban areas which will beautify the properties and increase the value of the properties ten fold. The cost of transplant is a pittance compared to the value appreciation.

I agree, the entire stretch of about 2 km facing the sea should have been completely 4 lane elevated road (bridge) on the river side leaving the old two lane road for car parking etc. Because the existing road is very close to the sea and because of sea level rising, it is better to build that stretch elevated road with at least 20 feet higher than the current road level. If there is cyclone or tsunami, it is possible that the entire road stretch will be wiped out disrupting the key national highway. Hence, concrete elevated road is better suited in that stretch.

Please dont exagerate. If there is no good roads n wide roads we complain. If they remove few trees there is plenty of place why dont you media people take initiative to plant few seplings.we expect media to give positive news. In india people already have lot of negativity n add it more any better thing happenning you guys project as problem. Just request. So many countries have very good roads n it all come with some cost. So instead of talking bad lets do our bit by contributing to have better nature.

It's our duty to protect nature and it is need of the time at the same time development also equally needed. Proper infrastructure is the backbone of developing in trade as well ease the human life. Compromise is a part Iwhen development is taking. Instead of blaming we should look for alternative. Make sure that while chopping one arrange to plant one.. At least which will balance.

Unfortunately in our country development means destruction of nature at any cost. We have lost the sense of reverence and respect to our beautiful earth created by the creator. When we ignore the aesthetic and spiritual value of nature we treat it as a mere object and material thing for our convenience.
