Kundapur, Oct 25: After the long-awaited conversion of the highway stretch into a four-lane, the natural beauty of Maravanthe is going to remain only in memories.
The task of removing trees standing alongside the stretch of the national highway 66 between Karwar and Kundapur is underway. A number of trees which lived here for hundreds of years are being chopped off.
The trees like Devadaru, Akeshiya, May flower, Gali, Ala, Goli and many more trees have just disappeared. We can only show the pictures of the trees to the future generation which is indeed saddening.
Maravanthe is a village near Kundapura with most beautiful beaches in the region. NH-66 runs right next to the beach and the Souparnika River flows on the other side of the road, creating a spectacular scenery and considered only one of its kind in India. The river Souparnika which almost touches Arabian Sea here, makes a U turn and goes westward to join the Sea only after a journey of more than 10 kilometers.
The heat waves of National Highway 66 Widening has reached Maravanthe. Souparnika river is partially closed. Highway widening has strongly affected the tourism.
In the name of development, we are committing large scale atrocities against mother nature. It endures all the abuse silently. We also have to sacrifice few things for development but let us all remember that lost natural beauty can not be restored. Let us strive our best to save the maximum natural beauty for the future generation.
