Karkala, Oct 24: You would have probably heard the expression 'all hell broke loose' which means happening of an incident thats terrible or chaotic. In Belman, God forbid, if it were to happen, it would be 'all wires broke loose', but the effect would be similar.
Believe it or not, electricity wires above Belman town seem to be on the verge of falling. High tension and low tension, both types of wires are seen here.
A close look at the wires reveals that these wires are joined. That they are joined at five points within a distance of 5 meters is clearly visible. Even the small, thin wires used to keep the electricity carrying big wires together, are about to loosen and fall off any time.
Wires carrying electricity should not be joined like this at least in thickly populated areas. Normally, iron mesh is used underneath the wires in other places by Mescom, but surprisingly it is not implemented in Belman.
When the first monsoon rains arrived this year, these wires had fallen off. But timely information to Mescom by the bus agents and local traders saved the town from disaster. But what the Mescom personnel did was only to join the wires and go back.
"I have brought this to the attention of Mescom and I have also raised this issue in taluk panchayat meetings. But now I have learnt from Mescom that Karkala-Padubidri road repair will start in Belman very soon and the Mescom has decided to change the wires and poles during this time." says Xavier D’Mello, the taluk panchayat member.
In the meantime, one hopes that the wires will continue to hang on.
