Udupi, Oct 23: “Udupi district stadium will get a facelift at a cost of Rs 2 crores”, said state minister of youth empowerment and sports, K Abhayachandra Jain.
He was speaking after hoisting the flag of state level women’s sports tournament 2014-15 under Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abihyan project held under the aegis of zilla panchayat, department of youth empowerment and sports, Udupi, Karnataka sports authority and RGKA mission, New Delhi at the Mahatma Gandhi sports stadium, here on Wednesday, October 22.
“The synthetic stadium in Udupi will be a model for the entire state and the stadium is to be beautified further with Rs one crore from the funds of Rajya Sabha member and Rs One crore from the state government. Rs 50 lacs are already released from the funds of Rajya Sabha member”, said Jain.
“State sports person Poovamma who got a medal in the recently concluded Asian sports meet at South Korea is awarded Rs 25 lacs by the state government. Vikas Gowda is also awarded with Rs 25 lacs. The state government is encouraging sports persons in the state”, he added.
“A well equipped swimming pool is being built at Udupi and Rs 20 lacs will be released for swimming pool in Karkala”, he informed.
“Qualified persons in physical education alone will be appointed in different posts to encourage sports in the district. Good nutritious food will be provided at all the residential sports schools. A national level inter university sports meet will be held at Swaraj maidan in January 2015 and a national level Rajiv Gandhi Sports campaign will be held at Udupi from December 15 to December 20, 2014”, he said.
District-in-charge minister Vinay Kumar Sorake inaugurated the competition and said that sports persons in the state should be provided as much support as provided by other states.
International sports person Apsara Rohith Kateel inaugurated the sports meet. MLA Pramod Madhwaraj presided over the programme. Corporation president P Yuvaraj, Zilla panchayat member Diwaker Kunder, Deputy Commissioner S S Pattana Shetty, Police Commissioner P Rajendra Prasad, zilla panchayat chief executive M Kanagavalli, additional deputy commissioner Kumar, transport official Arun Kumar Singh among others were present on the occasion.
Youth empowerment and sports department assistant director Dr Roshan Kumar Shetty welcomed. Sathish Chitrapadi compered the programme.
