Mangalore, Oct 22: Vanessa Tressa D'Souza of St Agnes English School has bagged State Under 11 Girls Chess Championship held at Adichunchanagiri Kalyana Mantapa, Shimoga organised by Nalanda Chess Academy. The event was held under the auspices of United Karnataka Chess Association between Oct 19 and Oct 21.

Vanessa scored unbeaten 4 points in 5 rounds and defeated her school-mate Shalon Pais in a closely fought tiebreaker with 1.5-.5 margin.

After five rounds, Vanessa, Shalon Pais and Andrea D'Souza (all Mangaloreans from St Agnes English Medium School and trained at Derik's Chess School) were tied with 4 points and 12.5 progressive score.

Andrea was pushed to the third place in cut progressive calculations. Shalon Pais had to be content for Runner Up position after going down to Vanessa in tiebreaker.

While the Girls category was dominated by Mangalorean Girls in the boy’s section defending champion Viani Antonio D'Cunha of St Aloysius Primary School, Mangalore took the limelight by scoring unbeaten 6.5 points in 8 rounds. However, he had to be content for Runner Up place, as the title was bagged by top seeded Yashas D of Shimoga with 7.5 points.

With this performance, Vanessa D'Souza, Shalon Pais and Viani D'Cunha are among the 4 players, been selected to represent the State in the upcoming National Under 11 Chess Championship to be held at Chennai from Nov 3.
