It's official : Mangalore to be renamed as 'Mangaluru'

New Delhi, Oct 17 (PTI) : Eight years after it received a proposal from Karnataka government, the Centre today cleared renaming 12 cities and towns of the state including Belgaum as Belagavi and Bangalore as Bengaluru, Mangalore as Mangaluru.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh gave his approval to the proposal of the Karnataka government made on October 27, 2006 to change the names of the 12 towns and cities in consonance with their pronunciation in Kannada language. Karnataka and Maharashtra, where the Assembly elections had just concluded, are locked in a boundary row over Belgaum.

The Karnataka government had taken the decision to rechristen these cities on the occasion of the golden jubilee of formation of the state of Karnataka on November one, 2006.

The Home Minister's nod came after Survey of India, Ministry of Railways, Department of Posts, Ministry of Science and Technology and Intelligence Bureau have given their No Objection and clearance for the change in the nomenclature of the identified cities.

Besides Bangalore and Belgaum, the other cities and towns which will be known by new names(which are in brackets) are Mangalore(Mangaluru), Bellary(Ballari), Bijapur(Vijapura), Chikmagalur(Chikkamagaluru), Gulbarga(Kalaburagi), Mysore(Mysure), Hospet(Hosapete), Shimoga(Shivamogga), Hubli (Hubballi) and Tumkur(Tumakuru).

Instructions have also been issued for rechristening the post offices and Railway stations, a Union Home Ministry oficial said.

Why these unnecessary arguments over names of cities and towns? Why can’t a city or town have different names in different languages? For instance the French called England as Angleterre, Germany as Allemagne and Spain as Espagne. Similarly Mumbai (in Marathi) & Bambai (in Hindi) are still known as Bombay in foreign countries. India is called Bharat in Hindi and both are officially accepted in the respective languages. Therefore, why can’t both Mangalore, Bangalore & Belgaum (in English) and Mangaluru, Bengaluru & Belgavi (in Kannada) be officially accepted?

    @ Dinesh Poojary,

Please note that, the above proposal was sent by the then govt of H D Kumaraswamy. not present Siddu govt. And now this proposal is accepted by your so called favourite(FEKU) Modi govt. Dont simply blame on Present Karnataka Govt. Please read and understand the news properly before commenting on it.

Actually we don't need the change in the name of our city. No one asked for it. We need better infrastructures, Rasthe Bhagya, Railu Bhagya, Udyoga Bhagya, That is the need of the hour. Not this HESARU BADALISUVA BHAGYA.

Guys, Every language has its own characteristics and features. And it should be like that itself. Nothing should be imposed on any language at any cost. That is the beauty of every language. No one calls Mangalooru as Mangalore in KANNADA language. Also officially it is called MANGALOORU itself in Kannada. Also Official name for Mangalore in ENGLISH is MANGALORE. No one likes to call it as MANGALOORU in English. Afterall change of cities name will not make any development. If it is forced or imposed on the people, There in no difference in PRAJAPRABHUTHWA RAJ and COMMUNIST RAJ.

If these people think that, by changing the name of a city into kannada, they can come out from british mindset, Then surely thay can demolish all the railway, road, bridges, hospitals, dams, Universities and all infrastructure provided by the then british government. Are they ready for it?

I am not surprised at the opposition to 'Mangaluru' specially from fellow Mangalorean Catholics. This is more to do with our mindset than practicality of changing names. Most will dislike what I am saying, but there is actually sense in changing names of Indian cities to their native names.

Few years ago Madras became Chennai. It sounded stupid at that time, but the name stuck on because people of Tamilnadu wanted to call their city its native name rather than British name. Now we may feel stupid to call it Madras. Names of most cities in Karnataka are left overs of semi cooked British names. For example, what is Belgaum ? Natives call it Belagavi and it is appropriate that official name be Belagavi. Names like Mercara, Coorg, Shimoga are all remnants of British rule. The names don't make any sense. It is rude to enforce these names on its natives who actually don't use those names. Mangaluru may sound unfashionable now, but wait for a year or two, Mangaluru will blend very well into the system just like Bengaluru. By the way Bengaluru has become very acceptable so what's the problem with Mangaluru ?

Where as if, if you ask where's Fraser Town? you'll certainly be given right directions. Moral of the story is the natives always prefer the name that they are used to. Changing the name doesn't make anyone more patriotic. It's just that some of our good for nothing politicians like themselves to be remembered as the persons behind renaming as they they don't have anything else to claim credit about.

Dear all kudla the dostilay. (friends)
    My view is
Why not we all KUDLA people take initiative to stop this name changing non-sense. And if really need to change the name, then let change as KUDLA
99% kudla people are talking tullu and every corner of our people know the Tulu language. And still in Tulu we call the manglore as KUDLA.
We have so many organizations (Hindu, Christian, and Muslim) why not we conduct a morcha and strongly oppose the name changing. End of the day by changing the name our hard paid tax money is wasting.
And all our records (our education certificate, ration card, voter card, pan card, marriage certificate, passport etc.) need to change. And it is a big project & big money (our tax paid money.)
We demand to our gov’t, (our MP’s & MLA’s) the money using for name change to be used for our Mangalore development (Roads, water, Power, etc.)
I also request to our KUDLA lover lawyers to file suit for name changing in Supreme Court.
    This is my view.
    Real son of Kudla

If Mangaluru was the original name before British changed it, why is not used by locals. Just try making a few sentences in Tulu using Mangaluru instead of Kudla, it sounds funny. The name Mangaluru doesn't go well with any of our local languages. So again, No matter what government does, the locals will continue to call it what they have been doing it for years. Nobody can change that.

Of course I do believe that change is always bitter, nobody wants to accept it but sometimes it is inevitable. But in this case it was not inevitable and this is deliberate and politically motivated. You know how awkward it looks to pronouns the present new names.Better you concentrate on other burning national issues like border issues, developmental issues, infrastructure, food, clothing, education etc.Don't waste on petty minor things like this.Is there any national benefit by changing the names? Then it is acceptable.Let the names as it is.It sounds better and sweet.don't waste money from the national exchequer on unwanted things and try to earn a name and fame.RIDICULOUS

It is foolish idea of some uneducated cheap politicians to change names of cities based on silly reasons like "ghaati" pronunciations. All Mangaloreans should protest by conducting dharna and ignoring such name changes. Otherwise, you will find new and new names all over and all kind of confusions in documentation and certificates.

It was MANGALURU earlier and it will be MANGALURU forever.

When English people came here, they just changed the pronunciation.

Kannadigas called the city as MANGALURU or Tuluvas as KUDLA.

By the way URU is not imposed by Kannada. Then how do you justify the names PUTTURU, KAVURU, THOKURU, VAMANJOORU ? URU, BIDIRE, PADAVU, MOGARU, KATTE are Tulu names.

You are staying in Mangalore, but still not learned local culture and language?

You are mistaken, probably in 'Kundapuru' you might use the postfix 'u', but we call it Puttur or Kavoor even while speaking in Kannada, even bus conductors don't add 'u' in the end. They could have renamed in Manglur if they had a problem with a Tulu name. Whatever it might be it will be always Kudla or Mangalore for me and my next generation.

The correct pronunciation (and even pronounced by Bus conductors and locals) is PUTTUR, KAVOOR, VAMANJOOR.

Dinesh Poojary, Kundapura/Bengaluru it doesnt matter to me the change of names and its not a big issue to me. Mangalore is actually a british name, but i dont understand why most of the mangaloreans have the problem with change of name of the city to mangaluru. They behave as if they were born in america or england. In the same way smaller cities name in kerala like Cannanore was changed to Kannur, Calicut to Kozhicode, Trivandrum to Thiruvantapuram and many more. The people over there didnt have any problem with that.

Change the name is a big business, once Rajiv Gandhi changed Air India logo removing Maharaja. Millions of Dollars spent to change everything for no reason, then again whole things restored again Millions.

This is business by changing the name departments get millions of commission from stationary to painters to patents.

End of the day what we are trying to prove. Within country so any states within states so many countries with different mentality?

Once China said India will be 30 countries, I think we should seriously think on this.

What a stupid proposal and move! Wastage of taxpayers' money as every document where the names of the cities have to be printed need to be changed... every board, every sign, everywhere it will be changed resulting into lots of new contracts and new scams. What the people of these cities will get from all this... NOTHING.

All present names sound so nice to hear and pleasant to talk.

Will this name changing exercise will take the people towards prosperity? Why does chief minister Siddaramaiah not change his name too?

Next is INDIA to HINDUSTAN or BHARAT..

We must do that to keep our original identity.

Portuguese had renamed Bharatha to India because they had pronunciation problem. Some residues even today have problem in pronouncing MANGALURU and only those who are opposing the change of name.

Some people of Mangalore would have preferred KUDLA instead of Mangaluru. Their demand is justified because KUDLA is the name in Tulu language. But MLAs they elected are useless to put forward this demand to CM.

@ Then why couldn't BJP aka Bahut Jooti party do something when they were in power?? Is it because:
    1. One minister was raping his friends wife.
    2. Another was having fun with a nurse.
    3. Another late Home minister was busy planning riots and attacks on minorities.
    4. Chief Minister was busy looting our state treasury and shooting dead farmers.
5.Local MLA from car street was doing ZERO PERFORMANCE.
    6. MLA's were busy resort hopping in Goa, Chennai and Bang kok.

After your generation everything will be forgotten, as to who named it or renamed it... so, chill out and welcome the change... don't give it an unnecessary hue of Bengalurians inflicting their view on you, it's just appropriate to localize what the Britishers didn't understand them, when they anglicized all these local names!
