2008 Church Attack : Somashekar panel report rejected, Home dept asked to act against culprits

From Our Special Correspondent

Daijiworld Media Network

Bangalore, Oct 16: In a major decision, which should find ready approval with all Christians, the State Cabinet on Thursday decided to reject the B K Somashekar Judicial Inquiry Commission report into the infamous series of church attacks in Mangalore and other parts of coastal Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Chikmaglur, Bangalore and other within months of the installation of the B S Yeddyurappa-led first ever full-fledged government in Karnataka.

The State Cabinet, which met under the chairmanship of chief minister Siddaramaiah, took note of the completely contradictory findings of the Somashekar panel in its interim and final report submitted to the State Government and also directed the State Home Department to take suitable action against the culprits or perpetrators of the church attacks based on the nine-point recommendations of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

It may be recalled that the Christian community had organised protests and the Karnataka United Christians Forum for Human Rights under the leadership of Archbishop of Bangalore Most Rev Dr Bernard Moras and several other Bishops observed fast and prayers besides holding a massive protest rally demanding total rejection of the B K Somashekar Commission report.

Karnataka’s Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T B Jayachandra, who briefed the reporters after the State Cabinet meeting, pointed out that the chief minister as the Opposition leader in the State Assembly and he as the Deputy Opposition leader during the BJP rule in the State had termed the reports submitted by the Somashekar inquiry commission and its reports, especially the final report, as ``politically motivated to exonerate the Sangh Parivar outfits” like Bajrang Dal, Sri Ram Sene and even Vishwa Hindu Parishad.

When the issue was placed before the State Cabinet, a few months back, Jayachandra said he was authorised by the Cabinet to get both the interim and final reports of the Somashekar commission thoroughly examined by the State Law Department.

Based on the Law Department’s report, the minister said the State Cabinet decided to dump both the interim and final reports of the Somashekar Commission and also authorised the State Home Department to take appropriate action against the culprits as recommended by the NHRC.

Payment of suitable compensation to the victims and also the churches and other places of worship belonging to the Christian minority community, providing suitable protection to the churches and other places of worship of the Christians, taking effective measures to prevent recurrence of such incidents by the miscreant, action against the groups and outfits who had indulged in unlawful activities and assaults against pastors by alleging ``forcible conversion” and stringent action against the police officers who were allegedly behind the miscreants or had supported them and even beaten up the arrested Christians in police custody besides providing suitable precautionary measures against recurrence of such incidents and also the sensitise the police officers and personnel in specific trouble spots and also providing training to the policemen in dealing with such situations were among the prominent recommendations of the NHRC.

To a specific question on the NHRC recommendations appeared to be ``totally one-sided,” Jayachandra said: ``NHRC is a statutory body. We have merely asked the Home Department to look into them and take appropriate action.”

I find it hard to believe few comments on this article. Come on people, we are " Indians" 01st & then Hindus, Muslims, Christians or alike coz our country is divided on basis of caste only in last few years.
We Christians want justice to what has been done to our Places of worship - our churches. Let Government find out facts on " WHO ATTACKED OUR CHURCHES AND WHO WAS BEHIND THIS BARBARIC ACTS" We have the Democratic right to know at least this bitter fact as to who was it..!! What is the use of any judge Report if there is no result showing some justice to our Community.
And to those many people who have commented about Catholics being foreigners, we hold your land etc. We are Indians, we are Catholics, we follow a Certain Religion and so do you. Every Religion has a Right to Preach, practice and Propagate our Faith. So we do it. Do not generalize issues. Teaching or reading Bible doesnt make a person Catholic.
How many students do we have in society who are Catholic Institute Educated? May be St. Aloysius College, St. Agnes College etc. Tell me how many non-catholic students in centuries have been converted to Catholic faith?
Come on people let us grow up in our thoughts. We want Justice to prevail that is all and it is our Birth Right...!!

prabhu, just because we follow a different religion doesnot make us foreigner we have the same right as you since our ancestors also, belong to this land. you people are the most hypocrites who takes the benefits and then doesnot bat an eyelid to curse christians. This is also a lesson to christians , if you want to do charity work only help the christians like how the gujaratis, sindhis, malyalis do becos political parties including congress will raise their hands when you are killed and your churches and property destroyed. this doesnot mean the suffering from other communities should be deprived we have to refer them to their Govt. and see that they get help with Govt. money if the majority Govt. doesnot help it will be clear like water that they are really not interested in even helping out their community. Its high time our christians think and rebuild our community becos after all only money and power counts in this Country best example is the ambanis and adanis

How many "Italians" and "illiterate tribals" do you seen in Mangalore today??
Does anyone "compulsorily" force any non-catholic to say prayers in the 21st century in Mangalore?? Answer me!

"Forced conversion" into the Roman Catholic faith just cannot happen. It's all nonsense like I said before.
And stop hiding behind a fake Christian name "Robin", it's pretty obvious to that you're not one. Atleast have the courage to use your real name!

Somashekar must be grilled ruthlessly to find out how, and on whose orders did he manipulate the interim and final reports, and what illegal benefits he received from the former Yeddy govt.

He will not escape this time for sure.

We Christians are more interested in finding out who was behind the well planned Church attack, rather than the actual attackers who carried out the orders for a drink or two. It is most important to know which police officers had a hand in glove with politicians in return for the promotion, favorable transfers etc.

Besides, Somashekara, the Commissioner also be grilled under oath to find out the truth for changing the facts between interim report and the final report.

Justice shall prevail in democratic country.

    @ Avinash,
Stop crying foul and acting as though Hindu community is cornered in THIS CASE.

This has got to do more with delivering justice to those who suffered due to the evil designs of BJP/RSS government in karnataka.

Lets not forget in 2008 a large chunk of educated and progressive minded Hindu community too strongly condemned these mindless and planned attacks.

If we dont condemn something which is wrong today then lets not expect any one to come to our rescue if we are in trouble tomorrow.

    @ Vinayak,

THE truth is that Bajrang dal and other sangh affiliated groups with the blessings of state BJP/RSS government carried out these attacks on that fateful sunday on september 2008.

This FACT WAS FURTHER CONFIRMED by none other than the Bajrang Dal Convener - Mr. Mahendra Kumar who planned and uted this attacks with pin-point precision.

This was possible only with the complete backing of the state machinery.

Right from Yeddi, Acharya to local BJP leaders were all kept in the loop.

    Q:What is "New Life"?
Ans: New life is a separate newly formed group, that DOES NOT fall under Roman Catholic Church.
Are you telling me the evil people who plotted the church attacks with so much sophistication didn't know the difference between Roman Catholic and the newly formed groups??
No, it's all a lie. The main target was just to attack Christians, just because we are a soft target, and they knew nothing would happen to them under the BJP rule

Q: Who insulted Hindu gods in their books?
Ans: If these people had PROOF, then why not file a complaint with the Police, and let the law take action? What is the meaning of attacking innocent, UNARMED civilians, who have gathered in their place of worship? That also, attacking the WRONG people(Roman Catholics). What kind of cheap people do this?

Q: Why few others supported "New Life" conversion agenda?
Ans: First of all, this whole "Force Conversion" is bull$#it. NO ONE can be become Christian in a second, under threat. This is absolute nonsense. People have to undergo months long courses before being Baptized Christian.

While watching the great prosperity of the U.A.E, also the great love of the expatriates for their country of adoption, one thing is very visible and uplifting. The Great rulers of UAE are visionaries total freedom of worship to the people living there from over 200 countries of the world. Whereas in India, the people born in India are terrorized by the anti-social elements as witnessed in 2008 in Karnataka.

Mr. Modi, if expecting prosperity and peace in the nation, you will have to take stern measures to ban many radical religious organizations in India, totally dedicated to create troubles for other decent people of the same religion also mainly towards the minority religions. How, a visitor can be happy to see some people marching with swords? Is there any democratic nation in the world with that kind of sword carrying mentality to intimidate the public? Are we living at the 18th century in Africa?

The attacks on the minority Christians were well-planned for political mileage that will be revealed when finally the total truth is revealed to the whole world, then some culprits would be totally ashamed. Simply wait and watch.
