Bangalore: Three held for assaulting Manipuri youth

Bangalore, Oct 15 (IANS): Three people were arrested Wednesday for allegedly assaulting a Manipuri youth at an eatery here for refusing to speak with them in the local (Kannada) language, police said.

"We have registered a case against the accused and arrested them on a complaint the 26-year-old victim (Michael Lamjathang Haokip) lodged with police earlier in the day," deputy commissioner of police (northeast) Vikas Kumar told IANS.

The accused are Arun Kumar, 26, James, 25, and Karunakar, 23.

Police later produced the accused before a magistrate for judicial remand and interrogation to investigate the case further.

Clarifying that it was not a hate crime, but a provocative attack due to communication gap, Arun Kumar said the stray incident took place on the spur following an argument between the accused and the victim, who was with two Manipuri friends (Ngamkholen, 28, and Rocky Kipgen, 25) at the eatery.

"The accused told Haokip and his friends in Kannada to speak softly as they were conversing loudly in English and disturbing them and others present at the food joint.

"As the Manipuri youths did not know Kannada, they continued speaking ignoring what the accused asked them. A heated argument ended in the accused assaulting the victim with a heavy stone," Arun Kumar said citing the complaint.

As a result, Haokip, who is president of the Thadou (Manipuri tribe) Students Association in the city, sustained injuries to his face and head.

"As the victim and his friends were mistaken to be Chinese, the accused told them to learn Kannada if they wanted to live in Bangalore or go back to China," Arun Kumar pointed out.

The suburb where the incident took place has a large presence of outstation students, especially from the north-eastern region of the country.

"When we told them (accused) we are new to the city and don't understand Kannada, they told me in a mix of English and Kannada that this is India and not China despite our telling them we are from Manipur and not from China," Haokip said.

I do not agree with Mr. Arun Kumar justifying that it was not a hate crime but a miscommunication. Nobody asked him for his comments. He is the accused who has commited a henious crime & the law has to deal with him accordingly for assualt, probably even attempted murder. The victim was hit with a heavy stone on the head. Come to think of it, can Mr. Arun & his accomplices be part of the gang that went around crushing the heads of people that were sleeping on the foot-path some time back.

I see these kind of things so many times in Bangalore, Specially in BMTC Vajra Buses. The 500c and 500A which runs alone ring road, the conductors in these buses are rude and ignorant to the non-kanadigas. The North Indian youths are always harassed, I can give like 50 examples I have seen in my own eyes. Also too much harassment to ladies.
A lady misses her station since the Bus did not stop and when he asked for the stop, he gives all the reason that you have to come and stand near the door etc and then starts talking about how difficult his work is and then about his family and kids how they are waiting for him at home in a rough voice. think what she might have felt. What does that has to do anything with she asking for stop?

It is difficult to justify which side of the story is right or wrong.
I am of the opinion that at public places (Restaurants, while travelling or cinema hall etc.) it is better to maintain some sound level not to irritate others.
I had a bad experience. When AIE first introduced, some guys (mallus) beside me listening to music with external speakers rattling and I requested them not to disturb others with such noise and they obliged. There is way to approach and not our attitude to silence. (that will of course lead to violence)

Indiranagar has many restaurants wherein the waiters, guards, cooks and other staff are from north east. A random sampling will tell you that most people lingering there would not be able to speak Kannada.
This appalling incident is not related to Kannada language but some rivalry related to business.
In that part of Bangalore, Indiranagar probably is the last frontier before you come across Hindi only or Telegu only speaking people all the way till the edge of whitefields. And some of our uptight Kannadigas also respond in English for questions posed in Kannada.

The victim says the attackers spoke in a 'mix of English and Kannada'...
What they spoke , the victim understood.

Even the request to speak less loudly must have been made in 'mix of kannada and english' and the victim must have understood but did not heed.

Many residents of Bangalore are least bothered about local sentiments and do not even differentiate between kannada, tamil, malayalam etc.

Apart from language issue, new comers in a place should not make nuisance to others and should not show haughtiness with local citizens.

Manipur is still in inida and bloreans should know that ver well. Why people go to eatery ?? not to just eat and sleep. Its a place, where you can relieve your stress and enjoy a good meal along with our friends. Bangalore does not belong to one person and its not necessary that any visitor should be deemed to know kannada. These 3 goons should be well punished, so that next time they should realise, think and then act.

Chinese try to claim north east and some instigators here and in many other places in India create panic and insecurity in the minds of North East people. How can someone attack for not speaking their language?
Do they force them to tilt towards China? Attackers should be given exemplary punishment.

    very bad..these are not kannadigas..
Kannadigas are cool..quiet ..respectful .welcoming and friendly.
who are these goons to us their hands..these guys should be in prison by LAW..
Karnataka is a part of india and we are one nation..one people..
By images we can see all 3 are drunk ..anti social ..coming for bad background .. time for Doddaramaiah and company to induct all these kinds of Goons from he streets ..induct them into hard core army like putting into aindustrial conveyor and get these guys trained with thorough military training and deploy them on Arunachal borders..they can justify better fro their families and be some use for the nation..
these kinds of goons are by the dozens ...
Not even one person should be seen wasting their precious time on the roads or streets..
Even to be drivers they should be trained .. clean.. with clean uniform.clean taxis.. well spoken.. friendly.. and mind their own bloody business and not others..
for this sake it is important to have COMPULSORY MILITARY TRAINING for oena nd all.
to use their Human energy into disciplined and prodcutive use otherwise it will be national waste causing anti social problems for the civil society..
this is the problem of the nation /state..
These guys should have family planning and not produce antisocial elements ..state is responsible for 100% law and order and discipline..Ban LIQUOR.
CRACK DOWN ON ALL DRUG PEDDLERS..PIMPS AND HAWALA MERCHANTS...antisocial elements...
    all mafias..
Police ned to work on this..and maintain strictest LAW and Order.
Kanadigas have a brand connected with IT at international level..do not spoil it.
viist ASSAM..MANIPUR and se how wel they will receive an dtreta you..
so let us be EDUCATED...THIS IS TE PROBLEM OF THE STATE GOVT..
dont sleep..work hard like the PM..
CRACK THE WHIP on all govt agencies to stop these incidents in future.. unacceptable...
Karnataka should be friendly welcome all Tourists ..outsiders..be respectful an dont judge them ..
