Kundapur: Death of Kharvi youth takes interesting turn, murder suspected

Kundapur, Oct 15: The dead body of Pramod Kumar Kharvi (25), son of Mel Kharvikeri resident Ganapathi Kharvi found in Panchagangavali river on Tuesday afternoon, Oct 14 was not an accident but a pre-meditated murder alleged Kharvikeri residents.
They kept the dead body on the highway junction at Shastri circle on Wednesday afternoon, October 15 and held a protest.
Pramod Kharvi was popularly known as Kumar Kharvi in local circles. It is said that the locals had seen him at 5 am on Tuesday. Later, his dead body was found in the afternoon.
He was working in sand mining along with a local man. The witnesses said that the owner of sand mining boat and others had fought with him and had assaulted him on Monday. They had chased him even at midnight and he had escaped. The protesters alleged that he was taken near the river, assaulted and killed there in the night. They demanded immediate arrest of the suspects.
The body was taken to Manipal for postmortem on Tuesday, October 14. The protesters protested by keeping the body at Shastri circle on Wednesday afternoon while it was brought back from postmortem.
The protesters alleged that the police have not registered the complaint by the mother of the deceased. Later, the father of the deceased lodged a police complaint on Tuesday and an FIR is registered. The protesters shouted slogans against police for not having given an acknowledgement for her complaint.
The traffic was in disarray for about half an hour. The protest was called off after DySP C B Patil and police circle inspector P A Diwaker came to the place and assured that the suspects will be arrested and questioned.
The dead body was then taken on a procession from Shastri circle to Kharvikeri. Meanwhile, a group of youngsters entered the tent of suspects erected for sand mining, brought out the bottles of liquor from there and expressed their anguish by throwing them. Kundapur MLA Haladi Srinivasa Shetty and others arrived on the spot and tried to dilute the situation.
Pramod Kumar Kharvi was born in a very poor family. He was the only son to his parents. Two of his sisters have attained marriageable age. The death of Pramod has casted a shadow of gloom on the family.
