MUMBAI, Oct 19: A notorious gangster was killed in a police encounter at Dombivli on Thursday.
"Twenty six-year old Rajesh Bhaskar alias Bobby Nair had various cases, including murder of a Sena corporator registered against him," police said.
Acting on a tip-off that Nair would be coming to extract a ransom, police laid a trap at Adi Circle in Dombivli early on Thursday.
When he arrived at around 2.30 am on a motorcycle with his friend, he was asked to stop but he fired at the police. "He sustained two bullet injuries when police returned fire and was declared dead on arrival at a local hospital," the police said.
"Nair belonged to the Santosh Shetty gang and had earlier worked with the Chhota Rajan gang," police inspector P Joshi of Thane police property cell said.
Nair's accomplice, however, managed to escape, he added.
Nair was an accused in the murder of a Sena corporator and also the shooting of another Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre in Dombivli in August.
