Mozambique footballers to miss national polls

Maputo, Oct 14 (IANS): Mozambique national football players will miss the opportunity to cast their vote in the elections of the southern African country's new president, members of parliament and the provincial assemblies taking place Wednesday, the country's electoral authorities said.

According to Paulo Cuinica, spokesperson of the National Electoral Commission Monday, special vote right is only granted to certain group of people and it does not include the football players, reports Xinhua.

"The law allows a group of people to cast their vote under special agreements. That is the case of the presidential candidate of the main opposition, Afonso Dlkakama, who was registered in a different constituency but will be allowed to vote in another as he requested. The list also includes journalists, national observers and members of voting polls," said Cuinica.

The national team will be Wednesday playing the second round of group F qualification match for the African Cup of Nations to be held in Morocco next year.

The head of the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP) observation mission, Pedro Pires, who is former president of Cape Verde, said he is confident that the process will be held peacefully and he counts on the collaboration of every Mozambican.

"We put our trust in people, convinced that they are all acting in their best behaviour. Our wish is that everything runs perfectly," said Pires.
