Kundapur: Fishermen angry over cuttlefish fishing in Gangolli by outsiders

Kundapur, Oct 14: The fishermen in Gangolli have objected to the cuttlefish fishing by outsiders in and around Gangolli.

The cuttlefish is popularly known as Kappe Bondas in the twin coastal districts.

Some years back there was a huge protest over the fishing of cuttlefish by outsiders in Malpe. After the protest, the problem stopped. Now the fishermen from Malpe area with Tamilnadu registration boats have started coming to the Gangolli port for fishing. Even some local businessmen are supporting them. Why in Gangolli if Malpe has stopped allowing them to fish there? -These are few of the complaints from the local fishermen.

“And there are strict orders that outside state boats are not allowed to fish here. Authorities are not taking any action. Fishing by outsiders in the area does not help the local industry by any means. Excess supply pushes down the prices. There is a shortage of ice because outsiders buy them with no ice left for locals. This will affect the quality of fish. If such thing continues the traditional fishing industry will collapse.” says one of the fishermen.

“Though few outside boats were seen earlier coming to Gangolli, the number of boats has gone up like anything, because of inaction from authorities. There is no enough parking for local boats. There are bans everywhere except Gangolli, so they are coming here without any fear. Some people are saying as we are allowed to go outside, we should not object to people coming here. But no ways it will help us.” adds another fisherman.

The demand now is that the cuttlefish catching by outsiders should be completely banned in Gangolli.

The fishermen warn that they will go for massive protest if the fishing of cuttlefish by outsiders continues. Nobody as yet knows how and when the problem will end.

All the fish are available for only people with GOOD income .

Locals should eat only available sardine/mackerel or some other small fishes.
SO WHOEVER CATCHES WHAT IS IMPACT ON LOCALS?
SOME FISHING POLICY AS WELL PRICE/SUBSIDY FOR LOCAL HOUSEHOLD BUYERS IS FIRST NEED.

I can well recognize my name and even I can recognize problems of my native people!! It’s not so simple to understand actual situation only by reading this news. You have to come to Malpe (Udupi) where two strong local teams are fighting every year for same issue. It is DC who intervened and settled the issue last year.

Unfortunately same thing happening now in Gangolli. Even I know boats are coming from Kerala & Tamil Nadu. But you should also know that, our fishermen also goes to Goa, Kerala and Maharashtra for fishing. I don’t know whether you actually know or not but there are many local commission agents who makes agreements with Tamilians & Malayalis who catch cuttlefish for such agents. It is the Local boat owners group who oppose these commission agents who are financially very sound. With no option these groups always attack poor outsiders !!

I don’t have any objection if local people directly oppose commission agents instead of poor outsiders. Since you are also a migrant in Muscat have some soft corner for poor outsiders…….

    Thank you

Mr. Nameless, don’t think I am talking blindly and for your kind information, I do visit very often to Malpe & Mangalore fishing harbours. Don’t try to teach me this. Both the places we have Fishing boats & also two boats working for Fisheries Survey department on contract basis. Also I have Friends & relatives who are Fish merchants in Mangalore & Malpe.
I already explained you, outsiders not allowed to do fishing in Kerala, Goa & Maharastra. People are going till there & returns with in the limit. Twice they caught our boats for crossing Karnataka border by mistake. Please read all the local News papers for your better knowledge.
About local Commission agents, it’s your half knowledge.
Some local boat (Naada Dhoni) Owners, as I said earlier, they bring expert Tamilians to work in their boat on commission basis. This fish merchants take fish from this Tamilians & supply to other whole sale Agents for higher price. Please visit Malpe beach every day around 5 to 6 pm if you want cuttlefish.

It is not allowed to do fishing here legally boats with other state registration. Only on emergency they cash anchor at harbor. Which DC you are talking about. Mr. Reju or Mr. Muddu Mohan. Both left Udupi now.

Finally for your kind information, I am not a migrant of Muscat or Oman. I am working in Muscat since 1985 & every month I visit to Native & stay for a month. Out of that I utilize minimum 10 days to do social service for the soceity.

Mr. Nameless…when you could not recognize your own name itself, how you recognize the problems of local fisherman?

Without knowing full knowledge or without understanding the news report contents don’t comment blindly. Read it again. It is clearly mentioned here, “ Tamilnadu registration boats have started coming to the Gangolli port for fishing”. Hope you can understand the simple English.

When Karnataka Karavali fishing boats went to Kerala, Goa & Maharastra coastal for fishing, local from there beat them, arrested them, looted their boat, damaged their boat etc.
So, why Karnataka fisherman should allow them to fishing in our coastal area.?

Secondly, the truth is some local fisherman own some boat & they bring fishing people from other states, mostly from Tamilnadu. So this Tamil people have contact with their own state people and brings them here to Karnataka coastal.
