Bantwal, Oct 11: The demands of the Bantwal people have been answered at last. It has been finally decided now to proceed with the BC Road bus stand project.
There was a cry for a long time that there was a need for a bus stand at Bantwal. But nothing happened for years. When the local MLA Ramanath Rai became the minister years back, people thought that the bus stand would come up soon, which was not to be.
Then Rai as the minister even laid a foundation stone at Kaikamba Talapady for the new bus stand. Later people started complaining that the bus stand was too far from town. So the work on the same stopped.
After that, the government decided to open a bus stand on a land of approximately 1.5 acres behind Sri Chandika Parameshwari temple in B C Road. Adjoining lands were also bought from private parties for this purpose. But nothing happened except the government officers citing technical issues for not building the bus stand at this place.
Then the road itself on the highway became a bus stand. The traffic congestions because of this road bus stand made the situation worse. But hope remained.
Then an objection came saying Bantwal being closer to district centre Mangalore, it did not require a bus stand at all. Tired by all these developments, Ramanath Rai vowed to build a bus stand during the last election campaign.
And now the KSRTC has approved the plan to build the bus stand at a cost of Rs 7.39 crore. The project will be completed in 15 months. Tenders have been already called and the work is to resume in a month. It is revealed that the new bus stand will be built on the Hassan bus stand model.
