Mangalore, Oct 10: Kabaddi queen, Mamatha Poojary, Asian game Kabaddi gold winner was welcomed with fanfare at the Mangalore International Airport, here on Friday, October 10.

After receiving Arjuna Award for her contribution in Kabaddi, it was her first visit to city.

Speaking to media on financial reward, she said "Financial reward of Rs 10 lac is too less for Asian Games medal winners when compared with the financial reward by some other states in the country. Other states are providing good financial support of Rs 50 lac, one crore and two crore for the Asian gold medal winners".

She further said "Initially, it was announced Rs 25 lac but later media reported it as Rs10 lac".

Karnataka Olympic association president, Govindha Raju assured to provide Rs 25 lac for Asian games gold medal winners.

Answering on athletes from Karnataka who wish to play for other states because of very poor financial rewards of the state government, Mamatha said "Athletes from our state playing for other states would be very painful thing for the state. No Athlete should get such kind of feeling; hence, state government should support Athletes. If state government supports them, they will not get the feeling of leaving the state".

Olympic association president, Govinda Raju clearly said that no athlete should go out from the state and the state will provide support to all the athletes. As per the budget, Rs 25 lac is announced for gold winners in Asian games. "We don't wish any athlete to quit the state and government should support and provide all the facilities to athletes. Haryana government is supporting its Athletes by providing them Rs two crore financial reward. State government should also provide more support to athletes. Government should provide all facilities before they get medals. This will help to perform. Athletics has more expenses than other team games".

All athletes have opined that state government should provide Rs 25 lac for Asian game's gold medal winners. Earlier, it was announced as Rs 25 lac. Govinda Raju assured that within two to three days he will schedule a meeting with the CM with regard to reward money.

"Last year, we won against Iran in a tough match with just one point. This year, we won the match with ten points lead", Said Mamatha. About fitness, she said that continuous practise and camps help in building fitness. "Pro-Kabbadi is a nice concept. It has provided a platform for men and it will also inspire women to take part in Kabaddi. If there is an event like Pro-Kabbadi for women, I would like to play for Bangalore", she added.

"After the marriage, the support from husband, mother-in-law and father- in-law helped me to excel in my games", she further told.

Commenting on her team's performance, she lauded the efforts of juniors players who played fearless game.

Her father Bhoja Poojary, mother Kiti Poojary and brother Vishwanath, her husband Abhishek Kotian and other family members were present to receive her at the airport.

On behalf of the district administration Karakala Taluk Tahshildar welcomed Mamatha Poojary.

Apart from Government handing some amount as reward. It should make compulsory (Both State and Centre) that the MLA's MP's must provide a certain amount as reward compulsorily to the winners during the felicitation of the winners of their constituencies.

Even the District administration must do the same thing.

Secondly they must see that those who have promised that they felicitate the winners with cash or kind must do the needful within time (Because during the Ceremony it is promised once the programme is over they forget)
This is in one way of the in which we can encourage the sports in our country....

In Politics we have 2 JPs (Janardhan Poojary and Jayaprakash Hegde) in the undivided Dakshina Kannada and in Sports,
we have 2 MPs (M Poovamma Raju and Mamata Poojary).

Congratulations for both of them for making our Undivided District proud by winning in the Asiad.

In Kabaddi India is world champion because no other country has taken it seriously..Just like hockey.. India was world champion and winning gold medals in Olympics till australians, Germans & Dutch started playing.. so nothing great...comparing to Sania Mirza

'greatness' is perceivable when one excel in that field. We need to wait for the white skinned people to learn Kabaddi and win against them. have you seen Iran playing against Indian men's team? It is by last minute fight India could win the final match to prevent major upset.many teams in the world like Iran. Pakistan, Korea are threatening Indian dominance. No doubt Sania is a great player, but her singles ranking is not up to the mark!!

Congrats to the athletes who have brought medals and laurels to our nation and our state.
Probably they may get better cash award if they can form a strong vote bank !! Even a cattle thief gets better than our athletes !!.The present Karnataka govt is obsessed with it's vote bank politics.

Congratulations Mamatha! it is a pity to note that Karnataka government is lazy enough to help gold medal winners. Both golden girls Poovamma and Mamatha showed her unhappiness at the state government.
Hope Nidrammaya government will wake up at last to improve the situation of sports in the state rather than swallowing public tax money in various scams!!

Congrats to Mamatha n the entire team.

Comapare to the rich games like cricket,it is really less financial gift to other games which government offers but as a sports women she should not have complained it to the media or people who welcomed her in the airport as I feel it is against the spirit of the sports. Why should she proved herself that after all she is up to the MONEY not the national pride???
