Haryana school lifts U-17 girls Subroto Cup title


New Delhi, Oct 10 (IANS): Government Girls Senior Secondary School from Hissar, Haryana, lifted the Under-17 girls 55th Subroto Cup International Football Tournament title in their maiden appearance, beating Assam's Kiyang Kasiya Memorial Tribal School 3-0 in the final at the Ambedkar Stadium here Friday.

The Haryana team scored the first goal through Renu, who emerged as the highest goal-scorer of the competition with 12 strikes and was adjudged the best player of the tournament.

Pooja and Santosh were the other scorers for the winners, who were the only team not to conceded a goal in the entire tournament.

The winning team pocketed Rs.3.5 lakh while the runners-up got Rs.2 lakh.

"Our girls played like true champions. Our performance improved markedly from the earlier matches. The wingers did a fantastic job, supporting the strikers. Equally solid was the display of our back four," Ashwini Kumar, coach of the victorious team, said.
