Bangalore, Oct 9 (DHNS) : Heavy rains, accompanied by lightning and thunder, pounded most parts of Bangalore on Wednesday night. According to Indian Meteorology Department (IMD), the City received 42.3 mm rain uptill 11.30 pm.
The worst affected were the motorists as the heavy downpour flooded the roads, particularly in the central parts of the City such as Shanthinagar, Wilson Garden, Richmond Circle, Ulsoor, Seshadripuram and Gandhinagar. Around three feet of water had collected on Residency Road, off Mayo Hall junction. Scores of vehicles parked on the roadsides were almost inundated at some places due to flooding. A massive traffic jam near Hebbal on Bellary Road caused anxiety among those bound for the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) to catch a flight.
It was a bumper-to-bumper ride on the flooded Bellary Road. Vehicular movement was hit on MG Road, Residency Road, JC Road, St Marks Road, Vittal Mallya Road, Sampige Road and Kempegowda Road. While several areas in the City received good rainfall, it rained cats and dogs in Basavanagudi, Jayanagar, JP Nagar, Kathriguppe, Basaveshwaranagar, Magadi Road, Rajarajeshwarinagar, RT Nagar, Malleswaram, Yelahanka, Ulsoor, Bannerghatta Road among others. The rain started to recede after 10.30 pm.
Many houses were flooded at Sunkadakatte on Magadi Road and Padarayanapura near Mysore Road. Water entered the basement of several apartment complexes in Horamavu on Bannerghatta Road, damaging some vehicles. There were reports of rain water entering Mookambika School at NR Colony in Basavanagudi. The Halagevaderahalli lake at Rajarajeshwarinagar is all set to reach it full level as it has been raining heavily in the area, local residents told Deccan Herald.
Common occurrence
As the storm water drain was overflowing at Nayandahalli on Mysore Road, sewage water gushed into the Gali Anjaneya temple, a common occurrence when ever it rains heavily. Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) control room staff said that an old tree came crashing down on a car at 100 feet road in Indiranagar. A woman was injured in the accident. A huge tree was uprooted in Jayanagar. Another tree came crashing down at BTM Layout.
The IMD said that the rains in Bangalore is due to Cyclone Hudhud over the Bay of Bengal. The IMD has predicted heavy rainfall with thundershowers in the next 24 hours in the City.
