Puttur, Oct 7: A rape attempt accused committed suicide by consuming acid on Monday.

The deceased had attempted rape on a teenager relative on Sunday which was foiled by the resistance and courage shown by the victim in Urejalu near Nelyadi.

When all the people from the house had gone to church for Sunday mass, the victim aged 19, remained at home since she was not keeping well. D C Varghese the relative of the victim, who stayed in the same vicinity, entered the house by breaking the latch of the rear door. Then he took her forcibly to the nearby forest behind the house.

The victim foiled the rape attempt by fighting with the culprit. Ultimately she was threatened with dire consequences if she revealed about the incident to others. The accused even said that he filmed the attempt and would upload it in the internet. The family members who returned home after the mass heard about the incident from the victim and informed the police.

Uppinangady police after registering the case were on the lookout for the accused. They only had the information that he was still in the forest. With the help of the locals they searched the forest not to find him. Later on Monday they discovered that he visited his house to take a can of acid which is used in the making of rubber sheets. In the evening when the accused was surrounded, he threatened to spray acid on the police and ran away again. But somehow he managed to consume the acid when he came to know that he was overpowered. Efforts were made to save him but he died in the hospital.

It is learnt that the deceased had some theft cases registered against him. Uppinangady police are investigating further.
