Kundapur, Oct 6: A married woman has committed suicide consuming poison after going through harassment from her husband for a long time.

The deceased Anitha Devadiga (28) is the daughter of Heriya and Sesi Devadiga. The incident has taken place at Senapura, Gangolli. The husband Bhaskar Devadiga from saligrama works for the high court as a clerk.

During the wedding of the deceased two and half years back, the family of Bhaskar Devadiga had demanded 25 sovereigns of gold in dowry. But Anitha’s family provided much more than demanded to keep the daughter happy. But after a month from the wedding, Bhaskar and his elder brother started asking for more. They even went to the extent of asking Anitha for Rs. 10 lakhs.

A year and half back Anitha was sent to her maternal home at Senapura. But she was never taken back to her husband’s house after that. Bhaskar only visited her occasionally from Bangalore where he worked. But that was only to harass her for money.

Bhaskar had come last week to pick a fight with the wife. The fight ended with a bodily assault on the wife when she threatened that she would end her life if such treatment continued. The husband said he would not care.

And on Monday evening, Anitha consumed poison to breathe her last eventually. Gangolli police have registered a case against Bhaskar Devadiga.
