Bangalore, Oct 6: In a move to ensure that the tribal people, who have been dependant on forests for their livelihood, were not deprived of food during the rainy season, the State Government has been supplying 30 eggs every month to the tribals along with 30 kg of rice free of cost.
As many as 35,000 tribal families living in forest areas of Mysore, Chamarajangar, Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts are being supplied the food items every month during the rainy reason.
Karnataka’s Social Welfare Minister H Anjaneya gave this information to reporters in Bangalore on Monday.
The Social Welfare Department has been supplying food items for during six months in a year (June to December), Social Welfare Minister H Anjaneya said.
He said 2 litres of cooking oil, 30 kgs of rice, 30 eggs and 5 kg of sugar were being supplied to tribal families, who are unable to come out of the forest during the rainy season.
Families are also eligible to obtain items supplied by the Food and Civil Supplies department, he said.
The estimated cost of the scheme was Rs 30 crore a year, the minister said.
He said tittle deeds have been issued to 7,000 families residing in forest areas under the Forest Act, the Minister said.
